Feature request for product/service
API Keys
Describe the request
When you use API keys you have to go to Cursor Settings to toggle MAX Mode. This is super, duper annoying. Please enable the toggle in the model switcher, even when we’re using API keys.
Hey, it’s available. In the screenshot, you can see that my API key is enabled and there’s a way to enable Max Mode in the model selector.
It’s greyed out for me. Maybe this is something to do with Enterprise plans? I’m not sure…
(I should note, it doesn’t matter whether I have the Cursor Settings > MAX Mode toggle enabled or disabled, in either case the Model Switcher toggle is greyed out.)
It’s enabled for you. If you need to disable it, turn off your OpenAI API key, and then the toggle will become available.
If you need to disable it, turn off your OpenAI API key, and then the toggle will become available.
This is partially correct and is why I am submitting this feature request. You can have the MAX toggle enabled in the model switcher if you’re not using API keys. Or you can have the MAX toggle in the Cursor Settings if you are using API keys.
I want to be able to toggle MAX mode from the model switcher while still having my API keys active. I can disable MAX mode while my API keys are active if I go to Cursor Settings and toggle it off there, so I don’t see why I shouldn’t be able to keep my API keys active and toggle it off from the model switcher WITHOUT having to go into Cursor Settings.
Yes, this is a bug specifically with the OpenAI API key. If it’s active, Max mode becomes unavailable. This doesn’t happen with other API keys like Anthropic or Google. I believe it will be fixed soon.

Got it, thank you! Transitioned this to a bug report then, though I’m sure it’s already been submitted from the sound of it. Thank you for your patience and response! Very much looking forward to this being fixed…
