New chat is locked to Agent Mode when launching Cursor, despite Default Mode is Ask

Cursor Settings → Agents → Default Mode: Ask

If Cursor is not terminated, add New Chat tabs , it’s Ask mode, no problem.
Terminates Cursor (make sure no opened chats), then launch Cursor again, the new chat will always be Agent (which I’m expecting to be what I set Default Mode: Ask ).

Hey, this is a known issue: Default Mode gets ignored when you create a new chat after restarting. The team is aware and working on a fix.

Workaround, quick mode switch:

  • Shift+Tab to toggle between Ask and Agent
  • Or use the mode selector at the top of the chat
