Only paid models are displayed in the chat function, making it unusable

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

When I send a chat message, I get the following error:
Get Cursor Pro for more Agent usage, unlimited Tab, and more.
• Upgrade to Pro
• Switch Models

Pressing “Switch Models” only makes the button disappear.
Even with options other than “Ask,” the “Composer 2.5 (key icon)” is displayed to the right.

●Things I’ve tried
The problem seems to be related to Composer 2.5, and the support team via email suggested trying to switch models using shortcuts, which I did.

After trying various things, I found that the model switching screen was only switchable for a few seconds after opening the project.

Also, even if I quickly switched to “Auto,” it would inexplicably revert back to “Composer 2.5.”

Steps to Reproduce

チャット送信時、モデル変更選択時(プロジェクトを開いて数秒間のみ)

Expected Behavior

I can switch models and use chat.

Does this stop you from using Cursor

No - Cursor works, but with this issue

Hey, thanks for the detailed report with the Request ID and the video.

The “You’ve hit your usage limit” error means you’ve used up the monthly limit on the free plan. That’s why you’re seeing this behavior. When you hit the limit, Cursor auto-switches to Composer 2.5, but that model is also blocked on the free tier. So any model you pick will “work for a couple seconds” and then switch back. On the free plan right now, there isn’t any model you can switch to until the limit resets.

To keep going, you’ve got two options:

  • Wait for the limit to reset. On the free plan it refreshes once a month from your signup date.
  • Upgrade to Pro for a higher volume of Agent requests.

About the UI confusion. The silent switch to Composer 2.5 without a clear notice that you hit the limit is a known issue and we’re tracking it. No exact ETA for a fix yet. The limit itself is working as expected though, so it’s not an access bug.

Let me know if the issue still happens after the limit resets.

Thank you for confirming the issue and providing a response.

I apologize for the late reply.

It seems I’ve reached my limit for some reason.

I will try again after the limit is reset.

Thank you also for investigating and addressing the issue.

I appreciate your continued assistance.

No problem. On the Free plan, the limit resets once a month from your registration date, so after the reset the model should switch normally again.

If the issue comes back after the limit resets, message me here and we’ll take a closer look.
