OpenAI API Key Won’t Save

Describe the Bug

OpenAI API key is not verifying or saving in Cursor settings and I am unable to use Cursor with my own OpenAI API key as a result. I pay for Cursor Pro subscription and should be able to do this I believe.

Steps to Reproduce

In Cursor settings when I try to add the API key to OpenAI’s API key field, it gives me the option to verify, but it spins for a second and then nothing happens. If I leave the settings and come back, it doesn’t save my key here.

No error message or indication that it couldn’t verify, but the quick return to previous state on verify feels off somehow.

Entering the same key into another model/provider such as Anthropic, it correctly fails verification, but if I leave the key here it actually persists when I close and come back to the settings.

Expected Behavior

OpenAI’s API key field in cursor settings should accept and verify and persist and use a valid API key.

Hey, yes, we’re aware of this bug — the team is already working on a fix. Hopefully, an update will be released soon to resolve it.

Neat, thanks!

I searched the forum for similar topics but didn’t find anything. Cursor support was also less than helpful with this issue.

Happy to hear it’s a known issue. Will await resolution.
