Cursor keeps turning off the OpenAI API Key in Cursor settings. I’ll re-enable it then it eventually turns itself off again and I need to go back into settings to re-enable, quite annoying - especially when the Pro sub runs out of requests. I should never run out of requests because I brought my own API key yet the editor seemingly toggles my key off randomly
Hi @ccheney
Try to remember if you might’ve pressed the shortcut Cmd + Shift + 0
, this shortcut disables the OpenAI API key.
This is definitely not an ‘accidental shortcut’ bug.
It has been there for 2-3 last versions.
I see it randomly changing back my setting regularly.
Once I’ve tried to enabled the proxy setting. Now this proxy setting randomly enables.
I think settings are reverted to something previous, perhaps on sync (?). And it doesn’t properly save / respect the OAI setting (?). Just speculating.

I knew I wasn’t crazy, thanks for corroborating
Could you please let me know your version of Cursor?
It might have been solved in one of the latest versions. I’m on Version: 0.44.8 now, haven’t seen it last few days. Will report if it resurfaced
The bug has resurfaced.
Specifically, I noticed that:
- Cursor randomly changes sonnet 3.5 to gpt-4o in chat/composer
- it randomly turns on the OpenAI custom API key, after I disabled it in Settings - Models
I don’t have a specific way to reproduce it, I’m just using the app and stumbling into that randomly. Quite annoying tbh!
I’m using following version:
Version: 0.44.11
VSCode Version: 1.93.1
Commit: fe574d0820377383143b2ea26aa6ae28b3425220

Electron: 30.5.1
Chromium: 124.0.6367.243
Node.js: 20.16.0
V8: 12.4.254.20-electron.0
OS: Darwin arm64 24.2.0
Hey, can you make sure you have emptied the API key (and URL if you used it) for your API key before disabling it, as other users have reported it turns back on if there are values in these boxes.
We’re hoping to push some stability improvements around this soon, as it often isn’t the clearest!
