The new version is hard to use

The new version of Cursor is really hard to use. Every time I open the software, it shows some weird, messy interface that’s all over the place. It’s not as good as the old version—before, it would open straight into the IDE and take me right back to my last project, but now it doesn’t do that at all, and I have no idea how to use it. So now I don’t dare to just double-click the icon to open the software; instead, I have to find my project folder and drag it onto the Cursor icon. It’s such a pain to use.

Go to the top right corner of the window, click on the “IDE ^” button. You should be back to the old/familiar IDE (VS code style) window

Thanks, but opening it by dragging the project folder directly onto the icon is different from opening it through here — the chat records are different. Oh well, I’ll just make do with it like this.

Hey, you can bring back the old flow. Go to Cursor Settings > General > Startup > Window Restoration and pick Last Used Windows. Then open your project in the editor and quit Cursor from there. On the next launch, it should restore your previous session directly, including the last project and chat history. This should remove the difference you noticed between launching from the button and dragging a folder onto the icon.

A couple more options if they’re easier:

  • Open the project from the sidebar: right click the folder > Open in IDE.
  • Launch from Terminal: cursor <path-to-project> --classic to open the classic IDE view right away.

Also, make sure you’re on a recent version 3.13+. Older builds had known startup issues. Let me know if this fixed the chat history.

Thank you, it has now taken effect.
