Typing Focus Automatically Shifts from Chat to Files

I’m experiencing an issue where the active typing focus unexpectedly shifts while I’m using Cursor.

When I’m typing in the Agent/chat window, the active window suddenly switches to the file editor, and my keystrokes start appearing in an open file instead of the chat. This happens without me intentionally clicking or switching windows.

I’m not sure if this is caused by a keyboard shortcut, focus behavior, or a bug, but it’s happening frequently enough to interrupt my workflow.

Could you please let me know:

  • If this is a known issue

  • Whether there is a keyboard shortcut or setting that controls this behavior

  • Any steps I can take to prevent the focus from shifting unexpectedly

Happy to provide logs, screen recordings, or additional details if needed.

Thank you for your help.

Hey, thanks for the report.

This is a known issue, and the team is working on a fix. We saw a similar case recently here: Agent chatbox deselects itself after latest update, preventing typing in the middle of sentences"

As a temporary workaround, could you try:

  • Creating a new Agent chat (Cmd+N or Cmd+T)
  • Checking Settings > Network > Run Diagnostics
  • Temporarily disabling extensions: cursor --disable-extensions
  • Opening an empty workspace and seeing if it still reproduces

Also, could you share:

  • Your Cursor version (Menu > About Cursor > Copy)
  • Your OS
  • Whether this happens in a new chat as well, or only in an existing one

I’ll pass this to the team so they can prioritize it.

Thanks for looking into it
