Currently, Cursor’s application icon (at least on Windows) is a bit hard to see and most details get lost. The icon itself seems to be shrunk slightly compared to other application icons, and the black background box further shrinks icon at the center. I’ve also noticed it doesn’t scale very well (at certain zoom levels in the file explorer it appears blurry, so it seems like the size ranges are fairly limited.)
I think the screenshot below illustrates fairly well what I’m trying to say as you can see both the icon I personally use, the original icon (Cursor_original.exe) and the normal Windows 11 file explorer icons for comparison:
To be clear before the below comparison image: I’m not suggesting the executable’s icon should be changed to the one shown in the below image. I’m just showing the custom icon I personally use for Cursor. I spent a lot of time trying to create an icon I personally prefer (from scratch based on the original icon) that’s easier on my eyes and easier to pick out when looking I’m at files in the file explorer which is important since all files set to open with Cursor will use the same icon, as well as the “Open with Cursor…” entry in the context menu.
I believe a better and fairly simple or maybe obvious alternative to the current executable icon would be the icon currently being used for the application window (it doesn’t seem to have the black box and seems to fit the aspect ratio well enough(?))
Also, this is purely personal opinion, but I feel like a little bit of color can go a long way in making it stand out better and be a bit more recognizable against the sea of other icons… though again that’s just my opinion and others may disagree.
While this is mostly subjective (aside from the blurry scaling issue), I think most can at least agree that the current executable icon (on Windows, idk if it’s the same on other platforms) isn’t ideal in its current state and at a minimum would be better if replaced by the icon currently used by the application window.
