Urgent – Lost All Chat and Agent Mode History

I just lost all of my chats in the middle of a major code refactor. THis happens basically anytime i close the program. Its usually not a big deal, until it is. This is a MAJOR bug and really bad. This seems to have been going on for most of this year by looking at the forums, meaning they have no idea how to fix it. THis makes my future with cursor grim. I’ll likely switch to one of the many other high quality ai ide tools that don’t suffer from this kind of major issue.

Just experienced the same issue losing all chat and agent mode history while in the middle of a huge refactor. The app didn’t crash but was properly closed then upon reopen everything was gone. this is a major bug and inconvenience.

Same here. Just lost all my conversation from the last 5 days AFTER A SIMPLE RESTART.

What’s going on with Cursor AI? The conversations are THE MAIN feature from my perspective, and this has been a rocky year from this perspective.

The damage to our business (due to loss of conversation text and context) becomes gradually massive (downtime/delays/etc).

I also just lost all my chats (it has happened to me at least 5-6 times in the last two months), they showed up in the chat history, but they all had this infinity icon next to them and when I clicked them, nothing opened. Extremely destructive behavior, I was in the middle of implementing a major service

Try this solution guys:

Same issue here.

And, I spent some credits troubleshooting this. Any chance of a refund?

hi there. just installed v2.3.6 on windows+wsl env, the bug still there despite the promises in headlines.
NO previous history loaded, NO new agents history threads are saved&loaded after app restart.
will there be any 100% working solutions from DEV team for the 2(3)-month old problem?

maybe it will help someone, if in Cursor Settings →Agents → Defualt mode you have some hash string click on it and it will dissapear leaving only usual modes. then agents history will start saving.

Again. ALL CONVERSATIONS ON ALL PROJECTS ARE GONE.

SECOND TIME IN A WEEK.

This is totally ridiculous and unprofessional. CURSOR, are you truly a software company?

WHAT THE HELL?? this bug (and its siblings) exists for over 8 months, and its so harmful and depressing. I GUESS WE SHOULD ALL MOVE TO ONE OF YOUR COMPETITORS BECAUSE YOU OBVIOUSLY DO NOT CARE ABOUT SOME OF OUR MOST CRITICAL DATA (AND TIME).

WE PAY YOU A LOT.

OUR AGENTS ARE CRITICAL,
HENCE OBVIOUSLY ALSO OUR SUPER IMPORTANT CONVERSATIONS WITH THEM.

I have the same problem, I lost them already once. and now I upgraded and I’m getting the endless loading chat problem.

but in all honesty yes we want the chat history, but its not really needed. you just ask th agent to review all the code, and he gets caught up pretty fast

TL;DR

Avoid open folders by GUI, instead, prefer go to terminal, navigate to folder and do “Cursor .” and follow the tip provided by @razbensimon here.

Well guys, recently I’ve had the same issue and I notice some interesting things like:

  1. Sometimes open folders by Cursor GUI by menu clicks or shortcuts like Command + Shift + N (New Window in macOS) do with the Cursor doesn’t generate a MD5 as folder identifier but an Unix Time, sometimes open by this ways that I mentioned will generate a new folder all time. Why? I don’t know haha. During some tests I noticed that open by terminal using “Cursor ./folder/that/we/want/to/open”, this works generating MD5 in all tentatives.

  1. Sometimes instead to be stored in “$longpath/Cursor/User/workspaceStorage” the config is stored in “$longpath/Cursor/Workspaces” that make a reference to a folder generated by Cursor also using Unix Time, and probably that’s is the reason why, in my case, they lost the reference, because when I looked in the referenced folder, there wasn’t anything

Folders and their references:

But when I tried to find this workspace, I couldn’t find:

Folder that contains the images that I used during my chat, this was way that I could find what is the correct folder: (I’d tried add image here but platform just allow-me put 3 ), but inside folders you’ll find folder images or you can open db with sqlite3 and see table “ItemTable” that contains all iterations.

(the image would be here )

That said, I’ve been following the tip added here by @razbensimon (really really thank you) and I’ve created a new workspace, got the new folder “workspaceStorage” MD5 that was assigned to the created workspace via Cursor GUI, and inside the folder I’ve replaced by files in original folder 56..b9, database(state.vscdb), images and so on.

Note: Although it doesn’t seem, to have access to the chat history it can be a very useful resource to export everything you’ve gone through, export it, and pass it on to specialized LLMs for pattern recognition—for example … How do you like the naming conventions? What problems have you faced the most? And with that, create and improve your experience by generating new rules.md, agents.md, and similar files.

I am writing to formally register my complete dissatisfaction and stress caused by the persistent instability of this tool. I am using version 2.3.15 (Windows 10 x64), and the chat history disappearance bug continues to occur randomly after restarts or updates.

This results in a cascading chain of losses:

Loss of Work: All reasoning and context built with the AI is deleted.

Token Loss: I am forced to start new chats and burn through my token quota simply to re-explain information the AI should already have. I am essentially paying to work around software failures.

Lack of Basic Features: As a safety measure, I manually save .md files, yet the development team has not even considered a way to import these files to restore conversation continuity. This is a fundamental design flaw.

It is exhausting to deal with the same long-standing issue repeatedly. The overall feeling is one of complete disregard for the professional user’s workflow and financial investment.

Every time I update the app (MacOS latest ver) my last 2 weeks of chat agents are deleted.

same here. just happened again. so damn frustrating.

same here. so many hours and value are lost every two weeks. It’s simply crazy and below any professional standard.

Did anyone get this to work? can’t tell which is the current file since they’re all similarly sized for me

Having the same issue and now I can’t quit from cursor if i want to refer back to my past history. Might be switching to Windsurf due to such a critical issue if it’s not addressed soon.

Same here.
CURSOR IS SIMPLY UNRELIABLE FOR WORK WITH AI AGENTS.

it is clearly deliberate Cursor behaviour, not some external problem. I can’t believe this is still going on! Not throwing about data is a fundamental requirement. Please fix.
