Why do Cursor Automations need On-Demand Usage?

I wanted to try out the new Cursor Automations, but when I went to set them up I saw the message: “Automations require on-demand usage to be enabled.”

I’m already on the Ultra Plan because I didn’t want to separately enable on-demand usage. I was frequently exceeding the Pro+ limits with usage pricing, so I upgraded to Ultra specifically to avoid that. If I have a large pool of credits available under Ultra, shouldn’t Automations be able to use those?

It feels inconsistent that Automations force on-demand usage when Cloud Agents don’t, even though Automations are essentially a layer on top of Cloud Agents. I would have expected them to work normally with available credits (Ultra or otherwise).

Could this be looked into? It seems like a gap in how Automations are tied to billing compared to other features.

I am unable to try out Automations because of this.

Hey @nerdimite! This is a fair point.

Automations will use your included usage first, but require some amount of on-demand usage enabled (even $1). This is a bit silly, and we’re looking at changing it, but in the meantime, that might be sufficient for you to try it out.
