Why is auto mode slow??? I’m really tired of cursor, constant error, constant unhappiness is enough.. I use auto mode and it freezes constantly, I have to wait all the time…

Why is auto mode slow???

Hey, thanks for the report. Multiple users are seeing similar freezing and timeout issues in Auto mode on version 1.7.54, the team is already investigating: Slow Request + High Ping on Network Diagnostics
Please try these steps:
Run Network Diagnostics: Cursor Settings → Network → Run Diagnostics, then share the results here
Try the HTTP/1.1 workaround: Cursor Settings → Network, switch from HTTP/2 to HTTP/1.1
Switch DNS to Google/Cloudflare: System Preferences → Network → Advanced → DNS, add 8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1, then restart Cursor
Test a different model: switch from Auto to GPT-5 or another specific model to see if the issue persists
Could you share what Network Diagnostics shows and whether any of these help? This will help us determine if it’s part of the broader issue or specific to your setup.
As suggested by others, for me this workaround worked just fine: In your chat window, next the the Agent/Ask/Plan button click the Auto button. Switch Auto off (MaxMode also off unless you have the money), and check claude-4.5-sonnet (or whichever you fancy).
Thanks for the tip. Your suggestion definitely works if you want to avoid using Auto, but just a word of caution- sonnet 4.5 is one of the more expensive models you can use, compared to Auto.
$15
vs
$6
So it may eat up your usage limits quicker, and since I am on the $20 plan it’s something I try to keep in mind. GPT-5-mini and grok-code are good cheap/free alternatives to using Auto from my experience. GPT-5 is a good next step up for more complex stuff but not has expensive as sonnet 4.5.
Since I updated to Cursor 2.0, auto mode is much slower than it was in previous versions.
I guess it’s on purpose, so people switch to using Componser. It would be nice if auto is substituted by Componser, and in case it is not the best model for the task, it can contact others.
Steps to Reproduce
Use auto mode
Expected Behavior
Auto to be quicker.

Version: 2.0.38, updated today. I see new features are introduced by the Agent feels really slow, even though my internet is just fine, and the network diagnostic shows all good. The agent takes too long to modify a file. Response is really slow in Auto, and in the paid models (when auto is turned off) it is a bit better, still much slower than I am used to.
Steps to Reproduce
Cursor Agent to edit or modify any file (currently working on a nextJs project)
Expected Behavior
Agent used to be much much faster earlier.

WHAT the hell happened to cursor. I came back after 2 months to use it. TAKES 30 MINUTES to write one small change to a file. How can anyone use it? You guys are taking too many steps backwards with these updates and gonna lose customers to other IDEs. I’m thinking to just go back to vscode or copilot.
ok, heres a solution that INSTANTLY solved it. Seems like the ISP is blocking or slowing something down with cursor specifically. As soon as I used a VPN, instantly all requests went through normally. So even though cursor throws that VPN error, turns out USING the VPN is what solves it. The ISP might have some rules in place that inteferes with cursor. Test with Nord VPN for example to confirm if this solves it.
