Describe the Bug

Maybe you morons can fix this crap after what, a week? How long? No wonder people are moving to codex. I don’t want to have to close processes and reinstall the setup after every single one of your 200 updates a day.

Does this stop you from using Cursor

Sometimes - I can sometimes use Cursor

Hey, this is a known issue with the Windows auto-updater. The installer can’t overwrite resources because the Cursor process, or its background helper, is still holding files open.

Quick fix:

  1. Close Cursor fully. In Task Manager, end all processes Cursor.exe, CursorHelper, cursor-tunnel, and anything that contains cursor.
  2. Download the latest build manually from Cursor · Download and install it over the top.
  3. If %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\cursor is inside a OneDrive or Dropbox sync folder, move it out of the sync folder. Sync tools often keep file handles open and trigger this exact os error 5.
  4. To stop auto-update from running at a bad time: Ctrl+, then search for update.mode and set it to manual.

If the error repeats after killing all processes and doing a manual install, send your version from Help → About and a Task Manager screenshot taken during the update, and we’ll check what’s holding the lock.

Or instead of it existing for 5+ versions, you could, gasp, fix it? I know. Imagine that. People pay $200 a month and get trash that is never fixed. Amazing. You only have AI at your disposal and your entire company was built on AI, but why would you possibly use that to find/fix the issues, if your humans can’t seem to do it? When does actual logic kick in and yall are like gee, we should fix this. Maybe stop with the 35 updates every 10 minutes and TEST SOMETHING BEFORE SHIPPING IT WHEN YOU HAVE PEOPLE PAYING TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS A MONTH FOR IT.

The cause is explained above: the installer can’t delete resources because the files are being held by a running Cursor process (Cursor itself, helper, cursor-tunnel) or a sync client (OneDrive/Dropbox) for that folder. The steps in post #4 cover all known cases of this os error 5.

We’re tracking this bug on our side, but I can’t give an exact ETA for a fix. If the error happens again after killing the processes and doing a manual reinstall from Cursor · Download, please send the version from Help → About and a screenshot of Task Manager during the update so we can see what’s holding the handle. Without that info, we can’t move forward.

About the tone: I get that it’s frustrating to hit this during an update, but insulting the team won’t make it go any faster.
