My version of macOS is 10.15, I used the Cursor a few minutes ago. When I exit the software and start it again, I find that the Cursor cannot be opened. My computer cannot upgrade the macOS. Do you have any suggestions for me? Is there an old version of Cursor to install?
Hi, which version were you using before it stopped working?
Older Cursor versions are being discontinued as they are not being maintained anymore and still have issues that were fixed in newer versions. Also old versions are not compatible with the latest AI implementation changes.
This page has all downloadable versions but note that older ones might not be supported anymore soon.
Because I cannot open the Cursor now, I do not know the version of the Cursor. I have downloaded all the versions of Cursor from Downloads | Cursor - The AI Code Editor. However, all versions only support macOS 11.0 or later.
Thanks for the info.
That will unfortunately not be able to change as Apple does not support MacOS 10.15 anymore and it causes issues with Cursor. Therefore Cursor wont be able to run on this OS version.
Alternative/Risky
While I can not recommend unofficial solutions for upgrading your OS, have a look at OpenCore and decide if you want to take the risk of using it to upgrade your OS but be aware that it can break your machine completely.
That’s disappointing. I used Cursor without any problem just a few hours ago, I think that the old version of Cursor under macOS 10.15 is ok, but the official has forced the user to download the latest Cursor.
@deanrie any options for those who can’t upgrade MacOS to supported version?
Unfortunately, no, VSCode stopped supporting these systems in 2024, and there are no other options at the moment.
That’s not technically true, the user can partition their hard drive and create a linux dual boot system or they can use bootable linux usb stick or they can rent a cheap linux VPS or they can use a VM.
There restriction is only that they cannot upgrade MacOS further but they can easily switch or use Ubuntu, Pop_OS! or some other Linux alongside MacOS.
Thanks thats a good alternative to have a separate running system on the same machine. Didnt think of that!
In fact, I have downloaded the old version of VS Code and Cursor. Their basic functionality works well, but when I use the chat in Cursor, there is a problem:
You seem to be using an outdated version of Cursor. Please upgrade to the latest version by downloading Cursor again from our website. All your settings will be preserved.
I think the proper manner is that do not force the user to use the latest version, instead, the use have the option to use the old version even though they cannot use the upgraded new features.
As there were changes not just in the Cursor App but also in API, it would not be possible to keep old versions running forever.
There was a very long time where several generations old versions of Cursor were compatible, but recent features and bugfixes require a more up to date version.
Some users reported issues with older versions and it makes sense that Cursor team added the upgrade message to prevent those issues. At same time other users require integration of new features, which eventually leads to breaking changes.
Its understandable that this affects you more than others, but there are several potential solutions in this thread to keep you going with your current machine.
