Can't connect to agent on Mac OS 11.7.9 after trying to update

I’ve been using Cursor for years on Mac OS 11.7.9, it insisted I update this morning and I attempted to but the newest version is incompatible with my mac – after downloading an older version (1.1.5) which does work on my mac, it is unable to connect to server, insists I update to the latest version of Cursor…which won’t work on my mac.

Hey, this is a known compatibility issue. Newer Cursor versions require macOS 12 Monterey or later. macOS 11 Big Sur is no longer supported.

Unfortunately, using an older Cursor version like 1.1.5 isn’t a workaround either, since the server requires a minimum client version to connect.

The only path forward is updating your macOS. Could you check what Mac model you have? Apple menu > About This Mac. If your hardware supports macOS 12 or later, updating the OS should fix this completely.

If your Mac can’t run Monterey or later, then unfortunately there’s no way to keep using Cursor on that machine right now.

Let me know your Mac model and I can confirm if a macOS upgrade is an option for you.

Hi -

We have a MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019), 2.3 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9.

It’s just kind of crazy that we’ve been using cursor all day every day and all of a sudden we can’t use it because of an update button - should we cancel our plan?

Thanks,
Jonathan

MacBook Pro 16-inch 2019 supports macOS up to Sonoma 14. So updating macOS should fully fix the issue, and Cursor will work like before.

You can update via System Preferences > Software Update. I recommend macOS Sonoma 14 since it’s the latest version available for your model.

I get that this is frustrating. Everything was working, then it suddenly stopped after an update. Unfortunately, macOS 11 Big Sur is no longer supported by Cursor and by Electron, which Cursor is built on, so older client versions can’t connect to the server either.

If you want to pause your subscription while you update macOS, you can do it via https://cursor.com/settings. But the macOS update shouldn’t take too long, and things should be back to normal after that.

Let me know if you have any questions after the update.

Thanks - we’ll look into that as a possibility. It’s been tough without Cursor, though we’ve been managing with just VS code and copilot integration.

Best,
Jonathan
