Describe the Bug

mail to support:
Dear Cursor Support Team,

I am writing to request assistance in recovering 47 lost conversations after an unexpected upgrade from Cursor 1.5.5 to 2.0.

SITUATION:

  • Account:
  • Authentication: :white_check_mark: Active and valid (JWT token confirmed)
  • Lost conversations: 47 chat panels with 12 main composer IDs
  • Local database: Restored with metadata intact
  • Issue: Messages are not synchronizing after the version upgrade

TECHNICAL DETAILS:

  • Version: 1.5.5 → forced upgrade to 2.0 → restored to 1.5.5
  • OS: macOS 24.6.0 (ARM64)
  • Status: Authentication token is valid and account is intact
  • Root cause: Cloud synchronization broken after upgrade

COMPOSER IDS (Main conversations):
-xxxxx

WHAT I NEED:
Could you please:

  1. Check the server-side message data for the composer IDs listed above
  2. Resynchronize the conversations with Cursor 1.5.5
  3. Or confirm if messages were purged during the 2.0 upgrade

ATTACHED FILES:

  • SUPPORT_CURSOR_REPORT.md (detailed technical report)
  • Composer IDs list
  • Database metadata

Support answer:
Hi Alexandre, thanks for reaching out!

Unfortunately, chat histories in Cursor are stored locally on your device only (for privacy reasons), and we’re not able to restore previous conversations from our servers. Chat history can be cleared during app updates and system processes to ensure optimal performance, which is what happened during your upgrade to 2.0.

I know this isn’t the answer you were hoping for, and I’m sorry we can’t recover those conversations.

Steps to Reproduce

xx

Operating System

MacOS

Current Cursor Version (Menu → About Cursor → Copy)

Version: 1.5.5 (Universal)
VSCode Version: 1.99.3

Does this stop you from using Cursor

Yes - Cursor is unusable

hi @Alexandre_Leblanc and thank you for the detailed bug report.

You have received the correct answer from our support. Chat history is stored on device only and you are required to have backups of your code and data on your computer.

Additionally I suggest using an extension like SpecStory to automatically export chats if you rely on them heavily.
