A sad thing: I can no longer use Cursor

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

Cursor keeps showing “connection failed” or “VPN connection failed”. However, when I tested the connection using Cursor itself, everything worked normally.

I can no longer use Cursor normally. Basically, a connection error occurs after I have 3 to 4 conversations. This has been the case ever since I upgraded to version 2.0, and it has only gotten worse now. I am in China.

Steps to Reproduce

A connection error occurs during a normal conversation.

Does this stop you from using Cursor

Yes - Cursor is unusable

Hey @tuzki :waving_hand:

I’m really sorry you’re experiencing this — I can only imagine how frustrating it must be, especially since it started after upgrading to 2.0.

Since you mentioned you’re in China, this could be related to network connectivity restrictions. Here are some things that might help:

Quick things to try:

  1. VPN Settings — Make sure your VPN is configured correctly and consistently connected. Some VPNs have connection drops that might trigger this.

  2. Connection Test — You mentioned Cursor’s connection test works, but have you tried testing from a different network or time of day?

  3. Rate Limiting — The “after 3-4 conversations” pattern suggests it might be hitting some rate limit or timeout. Try longer pauses between conversations.

  4. Proxy Settings — Check if Cursor needs specific proxy configuration in your network settings.

For the Cursor Team:

This seems like a legitimate bug report — connection failures after 3-4 conversations (especially in China) could be related to:

  • Timeout settings

  • Rate limiting

  • VPN/proxy detection issues

  • Network stability checks

I really hope you can get this resolved soon. Cursor is such a powerful tool, and it’s heartbreaking when technical issues prevent you from using it.

Hang in there! :crossed_fingers:

Hey, thanks for the report.

Please try:

  1. Open Cursor Settings Ctrl + ,
  2. Search for “HTTP/2”
  3. Enable “Disable HTTP/2”
  4. Restart Cursor

If that doesn’t help:

  • Check MCP servers (Cursor has an 80‑tool limit) and disable any you’re not using
  • Run network diagnostics: Cursor Settings → Network → Run Diagnostics
  • Alternative: as @Ariel_Atia confirmed, downgrading to 1.7.54 fully resolves the issue if you need to keep working

If you have Request IDs from failed connections, please share them, that will help with debugging.

Let me know if disabling HTTP/2 helps.
