Bug Report — the model dropdown is showing the wrong list (High / Low / Medium) instead of the models

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

I’m using the Cursor IDE (not the Agent), on Windows 11, version 3.14.7 (Stable).

Since the last update, something’s gone wrong with the model picker in the chat panel. When I click the dropdown, instead of seeing my list of models, it shows High / Low / Medium — those intensity/thinking-level options. The actual model names seem to have been pushed to the bottom, behind a separate little item that shows the active model with an arrow. Clicking that arrow opens another menu where the real list of models finally appears. It’s like the two lists got mixed up somewhere.

I already tried reinstalling and grabbing the latest version, but it didn’t make any difference. The models are still reachable if I click through that sub-menu, or via Settings → Models, so it’s not blocking me completely — but it’s confusing and clearly not how it used to behave. It feels related to the redesign of the model picker a while back, and I’ve noticed other people mentioning similar problems (thinking-effort options missing, reasoning level stuck, etc.).

For what it’s worth, this is just a nuisance for now — I can still get work done, but I’d love to see it put back the way it was.

Steps to Reproduce

I just open the chat panel (Ctrl+L) in the Cursor IDE, then click the model dropdown at the bottom. Instead of the list of model names, the menu shows the High / Low / Medium options. Then at the very bottom there’s that item with the active model and a small arrow — clicking it opens a second dropdown where the actual list of models finally shows up. That’s it really, it happened right after the last update and it’s been like that every time since, on a fresh restart too.

Does this stop you from using Cursor

No - Cursor works, but with this issue

This is intentional, not something wrong with your setup - which is why the reinstall and update didn’t change anything. What you’re seeing is a new model-picker layout we’re currently rolling out to some users: the menu now opens on the effort/speed levels (High / Medium / Low) for your currently selected model, with the full model list moved to the row at the bottom.

One tip to make switching faster: when you click that bottom row to open the model list, the search field is already focused, so you can just start typing a model name and press Enter instead of scrolling. And as you noted, Settings → Models still lists everything.

I completely get the preference for the previous layout, and I’ll pass that along as feedback - I can’t share a timeline, but it’s genuinely useful signal. Let me know if the type-to-search flow doesn’t cover how you like to switch models.

Hi Mohit,

Thanks for the quick and honest explanation — I appreciate knowing it’s intentional rather than something broken on my side.

I have to be straight with you though: for my workflow this feels like a downgrade, and honestly a pretty significant one. Before, I could see at a glance which model I was working with — the model name sat right there as the placeholder/selection in the dropdown. Now I can’t see the active model name at all. All I get is High / Medium / Low, and the actual model I’m using is hidden away behind an extra click into that bottom sub-menu.

The type-to-search tip is nice, but it doesn’t really fix the core issue: I’ve lost the “at a glance” visibility of what model I’m on. When you’re jumping between models a lot during a session, that constant extra click (and the fact that you can’t see your current model without opening a second menu) genuinely slows things down compared to how it was before.

I understand these layouts get A/B tested and some users may like the new one, but I wanted to count myself loudly on the side of the old layout. If there’s any chance of a toggle to switch back to showing the model name directly, or at least making the active model name visible in the main menu, that would be a big win.

Really appreciate you passing the feedback along. Happy to share more detail or logs if it helps.

Now If we want to know what model the chat is on we can’t see that at a glance and instead need to click. Much worse UIUX. We’re all programmers here; you can’t get by with stuff like this.

Urgh, this is horrible. Please bring the previous version back ASAP. I need to be able to see the model being used for each window!

You guys are intentionally turning good working things into a complete mess. Let me guess… What’s the idea behind this? That the user might accidentally choose a model that’s way too expensive because they can no longer see the model name?

Thanks for flagging! You’re hitting the same model-picker layout change folks are discussing here, so I’m merging this in so it’s all in one place and you’ll catch any updates: Model selector in chat. Quick tip meanwhile: on the latest update, Cmd + / (Ctrl + / on Windows/Linux) opens the model list directly and lands you in type-to-search - no extra hover.
