If there is a similar post apologies for that, did not find any in a first glance.
With the latest Cursor update, its substantially more painful to change a model.
Maybe there is a shortcut to assign, but I was used to one Click and then type the model I want to switch to, but not it is One Click + 1 Hover away
I’m not sure of the thinking but this has made it quite painful switching between the different models. The logic doesn’t make sense to me. You generally pick an agent first, not the parameters of that agent.
A better approach to try could be:
Treat the model settings page as a way to pick and choose agents (like now) but with the ability to add multiple agents from the same LLM (e.g. Fable 5 Medium, Fable 5 High is shown in the model selector).
This way we’re treating the different models like agents, e.g. Sonnet 4.6 Medium is my agent for frontend, while Opus 5 High is my agent for planning, and sometimes I want to use Opus 5 Medium for my agent for more difficult frontend. etc. etc.
Hey, thanks for the feedback. You’ve run into a recent change in the model picker layout. At the top level it now shows Effort and Options, and the model list moved into a submenu. This isn’t something in your settings, this is how the new picker looks.
One thing that might help a bit: type-to-search still works inside the model submenu. Open the model list and start typing the model name. The extra hover step is still there though, I get that it’s slower for quick switching than before.
On the separate point about the picker resetting to Grok 4.5 in every new chat (post by @iHal9000), that’s different behavior. If it’s reliably reproducible, it’s better to start a separate thread for it so it doesn’t get mixed with layout feedback.

Type-to-search is indeed useful, but still I need to hover the sub-menu to access it which makes the experience subpar.
Ideally, if this layout is really desired for whatever reasons, a shortcut to open it like CMD + /to open main menu, then CMD + Whatever to open the next sub-menu would help a lot, especially power users.
The new model selector is horrible. very unintuitive. What are the design team actually thinking?? It feels like they keep changing things that worked well and wasnt broken. Not sure in favour of what?
When Grok is selected, it doesn’t display the model name. I think it’s clear this redesign is another one of those things where they’re pushing the user into Cursor’s preferred worfklows and models instead of letting the user work they way they want. We’ve seen this before with Cursor, such as the clear push to vibe-coding “web mode” over pro developer IDE mode.
Please revert this ASAP, it’s awful. I don’t know how this possibly got approved for release. Seems like some fiddler’s change to intentionally make it harder to know what model you are using.
Thanks for keeping the feedback specific. It’s more helpful than just “bring it back.”
@Costa_Alexoglou about the shortcut, I agree that for quick switching it’d be nice to reach the model list without extra hover. The request is clear: open the picker and land straight in the model list, or have a separate keybinding. I don’t have an ETA or rollback plan yet, but if I get an update I’ll post it here.
@A_K2 about the model name not showing when Grok is selected, that’s part of the same new compact trigger UI, not something in your settings.
About it resetting to Grok 4.5 in every new chat @iHal9000, that’s separate behavior and not directly tied to the layout. If you can reproduce it consistently, please start a separate thread with your Cursor version and steps to reproduce. That’ll make it easier to investigate without mixing it with layout feedback.
This change is terrible. I understand wanting to clean up a menu but you have to ask what is the most important piece of information the user needs to see and most often change. The answer is the model, the fact that I can no longer even see which model is running on a chat is unfathomably stupid. Want to improve it? Make the effort a separate drop-down next to the model and that’s it.
+1. It’s even worse now. When using Grok, it doesn’t even tell you the model. What sucks is I like using Grok. I don’t need to be forced to use it. Please change this back.
I can’t imagine why this was done. Now I have to click twice to change the model. I almost never change the effort, so I don’t know why that’s given priority. I am constantly changing the model – cheaper models for easier tasks, expensive models for more complex tasks. Cursor even has two different models for this purpose–Grok and Composer–so I don’t know why they don’t expect people to change models.
At minimum, please make a configuration setting that allows us to restore the old menu.
Why would anyone choose “Low” effort? Anything worth doing is worth doing well.
Why it was done? Do you have real usage metrics or it’s some ‘we need to change something just because’ UX designer/manager that are out of touch with real usage?
Also I want always to see the model, with Grok it’s hidden. I suspect some 1 higher up person push for that like it’s usually happens with bad redesigns in big teams. We understand you want to advertise Grok, but please not with this way
