Cant update model

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

Hi i’m a developer based in China, i’ve been using cursor for sometime and updated to pro since 2024 or early 2025. I just realized that I can’t update model from cursor settings-model, there are only a few for me to choose from (composer1, grok code, deepseek R1 etc, no gpt, no claude and no gemini family). i tried to refresh the list, also tried a few things to fix it but none worked. has anyone got the same problem? tx!

things ive tried:
1 uninstalled, delete everything in appdata/cursor folder then reinstall with the latest install file just downloaded from cursor website.
2 change network setting from http2 to http 1.1
3 check drivers\etc\host file and make sure nothing hardcoded cursor server to a weird IP.
4 delete the settings.json and GlobalStorage folder and restart cursor.

nothing worked…

Steps to Reproduce

cursor settings - models, refresh

Expected Behavior

cant see gpt and other models

Additional Information

i’ve installed Trae before but already uninstalled.. could that be the problem?

Does this stop you from using Cursor

Yes - Cursor is unusable

I tried to uninstall and install cursor again – first search all file with name “cursor” on my computer , deleted all (including the files GPT suggested), then restart, download install file again ,reinstall. but when i open cursor i still cant find the models….. any idea? my colleague sit next to me can see all the new models

Hey, thanks for the report. It looks like this is a regional restriction - you’re only seeing models that are accessible from China (DeepSeek, Grok, etc.), while GPT/Claude/Gemini are blocked. You can read more about this in the official documentation and regional access policies. Regions | Cursor Docs

Since your colleague can see all models, it’s likely they’re using a VPN or a configured proxy server that routes traffic through a different region.

thx for getting back to me – so this is by design, not a bug?

i chekced with my colleague and he’s not using any VPN (not one, several colleagues).

any idea? thx!

Thanks for the detailed description of what you’ve already tried.

Please try the following in order:

  • Run network diagnostics: Cursor Settings → Network → Run Diagnostics. If there are any errors, please share the results.
  • Check custom API keys: Cursor Settings → API Keys. If anything is configured, temporarily disable it, then restart Cursor.
  • Log out and back in: Cursor Settings → Account → Sign Out, then sign back in.
  • Try adding models manually: on the Models page, click “Add custom model” and add, for example:
    • claude-4.5-sonnet
    • gemini-3-pro
  • Click the refresh button: on the Models page, click the circular refresh icon next to the search box.

After these steps, please let me know what happened. It would be helpful if you can share:

  • Network Diagnostics results
  • A screenshot of Cursor Settings → API Keys
  • Whether logging out and back in changed anything
  • Whether manually adding models worked
