Describe the Bug

Subject: Cursor downgrades from 2.0 to 1.59 after restart despite successful update
Problem Description:
After manually updating Cursor from version 1.59 to 2.0.34, the update appears successful and the About dialog shows version 2.0.34. However, after restarting the application, it reverts back to version 1.59. Additionally, a persistent “New update available” notification banner appears at the bottom of the interface, suggesting an update is needed even though the About dialog confirms version 2.0.34.
Steps to Reproduce:
Started with Cursor version 1.59
Downloaded the latest version 2.0.34 installer from the official website
Completely uninstalled the previous version (1.59)
Installed Cursor 2.0.34 fresh
Verified the version in Help → About (shows 2.0.34)
After some time, a persistent “New update available”

notification appears
Closed and restarted Cursor
The application now shows version 1.59 again in Help → About
What I’ve tried:
Downloaded the installer manually from the official website
Completely uninstalled the previous version
Clean installation of Cursor 2.0.34
Verified installation permissions
Current Behavior:
During the session: About dialog shows version 2.0.34
After restart: About dialog shows version 1.59
Persistent update notification appears even when on 2.0.34
The update seems to “stick” during the session but reverts after restart
Environment:
OS: Windows 10 (build 19045)
Installed Version: 2.0.34 (system setup)
VSCode Version: 1.99.3
Electron: 34.5.8
Reverting to: 1.59
Questions:
Why does Cursor revert to version 1.59 after restart despite successful installation of 2.0.34?
Why does the update notification persist when already on version 2.0.34?
Is there a conflict between multiple installation locations or cached update files?
How can I prevent this automatic downgrade and ensure version 2.0.34 persists after restart?
Additional Context:
The update process appears to work initially (version shows 2.0.34), but something causes it to revert to 1.59 upon restart. This suggests there might be:
A cached update mechanism that overwrites the installation
Multiple installation paths causing conflicts
An update service that reverts to a previous version

Steps to Reproduce

Current Behavior:
During the session: About dialog shows version 2.0.34
After restart: About dialog shows version 1.59
Persistent update notification appears even when on 2.0.34
The update seems to “stick” during the session but reverts after restart

Expected Behavior

No warning about upgrade

Does this stop you from using Cursor

No - Cursor works, but with this issue

Hey, thanks for the report. I noticed something important in your version info - you’ve got two Cursor installations on the same machine:

  • Version 2.0.34 (system setup) installed for all users
  • Version 1.59 (user setup) installed only for your account

That’s why it “reverts”- you’re likely launching different shortcuts that point to different installs.

How to fix:

  • Open Windows Settings > Apps > Installed Apps (or Control Panel > Programs)
  • Look for multiple Cursor entries
  • Uninstall the old Version 1.59 installation
  • Remove old desktop shortcuts and re‑pin the correct version from the Start menu

How to verify which version launches:

  • Right‑click the Cursor shortcut > Properties > Open File Location
  • Check whether it points to Program Files (system) or AppData\Local (user)

Let me know if you find two installs or need help locating them.
