Here’s what I’m finding is the cause and a solution for now:
Short version - Wait about 15 minutes for the background update to finish, delete the bad shortcut, and then launch Cursor from the search bar.
Details:
- After shutting down cursor…
- Desktop icon is replaced with a white page icon
- Task manager shows an active background task “Cursor is an ai first coding…”
- Wait for about 10 minutes
- Cursor Icon reappears where it was before
- Wait another few minutes and Task Manager task disappears
- The icon doesn’t work because shortcut target is now: C:\Users.…\AppData\Local\Temp\nsiB441.tmp\old-install\Cursor.exe
- New cursor is now in C:\Users.…\AppData\Local\Programs\cursor\Cursor.exe
- Delete or update the shortcut and run it from this location
