Cursor reset settings and chats twice in two days

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

Yesterday I decided not to issue a bug report, because I thought that Revo Uninstaller had accidentally erased something that belongs to Cursor. But now I just closed two windows of the program, opened a new window and I was greeted by onboarding.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Close the program
  2. Open the program
  3. ■■■■ the program

Does this stop you from using Cursor

Sometimes - I can sometimes use Cursor

By the way, if you try to open any reseted chat, the tab loads endlessly and cannot be closed.

These buttons didn’t help either

Closed automatically after restart

Hey, thanks for the report. This matches a known bug in the Agent Window beta feature that causes settings and chat history to reset. A fix is confirmed for Cursor v1.8.

Recovery attempt: if you have backups (or Revo Uninstaller may have created restore points), close Cursor and try restoring these folders:

  • %APPDATA%\Cursor\User\globalStorage\state.vscdb
  • %APPDATA%\Cursor\User\workspaceStorage

Unfortunately, once this bug triggers, data can’t be recovered without backups.

Going forward:

  • Use Export Chat regularly for important conversations
  • Consider the SpecStory extension for automatic exports

I opened Agent Window once this week, but I didn’t use it today, between the first and second reset.

A fix in v1.8 does not help given that the current stable version is 1.7.54, and the bug persists despite the fact that the Agent Window is no longer marked as beta or unstable in any way.
