Flexible Chat/Agent placement or pop-out option to avoid OS toast notification overlap

Feature request for product/service

Cursor IDE

Describe the request

Hi Cursor team,

I would like to request either more flexible Chat/Agent panel placement or a reliable pop-out / detached Chat/Agent window option.

I know similar requests have been discussed before around flexible panel layout and pop-out windows, but I want to add a specific practical reason for this request.

Current issue:
On Windows, system toast notifications such as Slack notifications appear on the right side of the screen. Cursor’s Chat/Agent panel is also fixed on the right side in the common layout, so notifications often cover the most active and frequently changing part of the IDE: the Chat/Agent area.

Disabling Slack or Windows notifications is not a good workaround for my workflow, because those notifications are useful for work. Also, Windows does not seem to provide a standard way to freely move toast notification position.

Request:
Please consider supporting one or both of the following:

  • Flexible in-IDE placement for Chat/Agent, for example:
    Explorer / file tree → Chat/Agent → Editor

  • A reliable pop-out / detached Chat/Agent window that can be placed independently

For single-monitor users, flexible in-IDE placement would be especially useful.
For multi-monitor users, pop-out support would also help.

The main problem is not just personal layout preference. The current right-side fixed Chat/Agent placement conflicts with OS-level toast notifications on Windows, and the Chat/Agent panel is often the part of Cursor that changes the most while working.

I found older related discussions about flexible panel layout and pop-out windows, but I am posting this as a separate request because OS toast notification overlap is a specific practical issue on Windows.

Thanks.

Operating System (if it applies)

Windows 10/11

Follow-up:

After using Agents Window for a while, I find the flow very practical: chat → folder → file. It matches how I work with agents.

It also feels like a good step before full layout freedom: the main editor layout stays the same, while Agent/chat can live in a separate pane or pop-out.

On my setup, this already helps with my original issue (Windows toast notifications covering the right-side chat). I still hope for more flexible placement long term, but this direction is useful.

Please keep this chat → folder → file flow as the UI evolves. Thanks.
