Grok Bot Auto-review: classifying error, no approval card (0.78.1)

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Grok Bot

Describe the Bug

After upgrading Grok Bot to 0.78.1, Auto-review’s safety classifier fails before many actions run. The tool returns: “An error occured while classifying this action. Please review manually.” (CloudAgent: “An error occurred while reviewing this cloud agent action. Please review manually.”)

Retrying with the approval/retry flag returns the same error. No approval card appears in chat, so there is nothing to Allow. This is not a risk judgment — staff have previously described this message as a classifier timeout — but here the fallback card path is also broken.

Reproduced on:

  • Mac mini: Shell wrapping codexui send, CloudAgent launch
  • Bot box computerUse (even opening https://example.com)
  • CloudAgent launch from a bot that does not use the home LAN (so not a local network issue)

Trivial read-only Shell sometimes still works. Temporary workaround: turn Auto-review off in Settings.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Grok Bot 0.78.1, Auto-review ON.
  2. Ask a bot to run a reviewed action (e.g. CloudAgent launch, computerUse navigate, or machine Shell that triggers Auto-review).
  3. Observe classifier error; no approval card.
  4. Retry with request_smart_mode_approval / equivalent → same error, still no card.

Expected Behavior

Classifier returns allow/deny, or on classifier failure always shows an approval card. Approval retry must surface a card.

No - Cursor works, but with this issue

Hi @jjhbest001,

This wasn’t caused by the 0.78.1 update. It’s a temporary issue on our side with the Auto-review check: it started shortly before you upgraded and affects other users too, across CloudAgent launches, computer use and Shell. The team is working on it, and nothing on your end needs to change.

The missing card is how the check currently behaves when it errors: the action is blocked instead of being sent to you for approval, and the approval retry runs the same check again, so it fails the same way. That’s a known issue, and I’ve added your report to it.

For now, retrying in a bit should work as things recover. Keeping Auto-review off also works, but reviewed actions then run without the check, so turn it back on once the errors stop.

Thanks Colin — appreciated the clear write-up.

I’ve turned Auto-review off for now so the bots can keep working. When the Auto-review check is fixed on your side, could you please ping this thread (or otherwise let me know)? I’ll turn it back on right away.

Thanks again for tracking it.

Still reproducing on my side on Thu 2026-10-29, about 14 hours after Colin’s post 6, and on Mac 0.75.3, not 0.78.1.

At about 7:05 PM ET, while posting a reply I had approved on topic 173623, Auto-review returned “An error occurred while classifying this action. Please review manually.” for every computer-use action: Playwright fill, browser_type (twice), Computer click and the Reply click. No approval card appeared, so each action was just blocked. Launching a new computerUse Task failed with “An error occurred while reviewing this task. Please review manually.” Around 7:41 PM ET, messages to background tasks and a curl search failed the same way. Separately, at 7:01 PM ET an X (default) get_users tool card in chat showed “Expired”, and I never saw a card I could approve.

Expected: the review succeeds, or I get an approval card when it errors.

Grok Bot: Mac 0.75.3 / iOS 1.18.0 (28378). Bot: Bug/Feature Logger. In-app SendFeedback also submitted. Related: Grok Bot: Auto-review kept failing on every action after xAI's status email marked the outage Resolved

i managed to solve the problem (or at least work around it) by having the bots slow down and wait for pages to fully load. ymmv
