Grok Bot computer: Chrome ERR_TIMED_OUT on every site, Update says up to date, Reset didn't help

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Grok Bot

Describe the Bug

Chrome on my Grok Bot’s computer can’t load any website (Instagram, Facebook, Google). Every page shows ERR_TIMED_OUT.

My bot diagnosed it: box-doctor passes all 11 checks, and direct requests from the computer to Google and Instagram return 200. But Chrome is forced through the egress tunnel at 127.0.0.1:8791, and requests through that proxy hang until they time out. The tunnel seems wedged.

This looks like the same issue reported here (that thread is now closed):

What I tried

  • Settings > Updates > Update Grok Bot’s Computer: greyed out, says “Your computer is up to date”
  • Reset Grok Bot’s Computer: done once, no change
  • Turned off VPN on my Mac: no change

Expected Behavior

Chrome on the bot’s computer loads websites normally.

Operating System

macOS

Version Information

Grok Bot Mac app 0.66.0 (Stable). Box Chrome 154.0.8037.57.

Does this stop you from using Cursor

Yes. My bots need the browser for daily work (Instagram, Facebook), so this is blocking my work. Could you move my bot to a fresh computer from your side? I can keep Grok Bot closed on all devices while you do it.

  • Yes - Cursor is unusable
  • Sometimes - I can sometimes use Cursor
  • No - Cursor works, but with this issue

The more details you provide, the easier it is for us to reproduce and fix the issue. Thanks!

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Ask the bot to open https://www.instagram.com or https://www.google.com in its computer’s Chrome

  2. The page spins, then shows ERR_TIMED_OUT

  3. Settings > Updates > Update Grok Bot’s Computer is greyed out (“Your computer is up to date”)

Hey @Nic_Gong, thanks for the report and for the diagnosis from your bot, it helped a lot.

This comes from a setting on your Mac: when “Route traffic through this computer” is on, Chrome on Grok Bot’s computer goes out through your Mac’s own internet connection instead of the cloud. If your Mac can’t reach a site directly (for example with the VPN off, or with a VPN that only covers some apps), every page on the bot’s computer times out. That’s also why Reset didn’t change anything. The setting may have been turned on for you recently without you choosing it.

Could you try this and tell me what happens?

  1. Open Grok Bot on your Mac.
  2. Go to Settings → Computer
  3. Under Network, turn off “Route traffic through this computer”
  4. If Grok Bot is installed on any other computer, turn the same setting off there too.
  5. Ask your bot to open https://www.google.com in Chrome again, in a new tab.

Does the page load now?

Thanks Colin — that fixed it.

I turned off “Route traffic through this computer” in Settings → Computer → Network. After that, Chrome on the bot’s computer loads Google, Instagram, and Facebook normally again.

Appreciate the help. Everything is working now.
