Help! Cursor Editor is Maxing Out My CPU and RAM

I’m experiencing a serious performance issue with Cursor. It’s consuming 100% of my CPU and 90% of my RAM, making my laptop almost unusable.

My Laptop Specs:

  • CPU: i5

  • RAM: 16GB DDR4

  • Storage: 512GB SSD M.2 SATA

Current Setup:

  1. Cursor version: 0.4.5.17

  2. Custom UI Style extension: https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=subframe7536.custom-ui-style

  3. Working on a single project folder.

  4. Not using the built-in AI Chat (font is too small), currently using the browser version instead.

Scenario 1:

  1. Upgraded to version 0.4.6.11.

  2. Cursor crashed after applying the Custom UI Style.

  3. Launched Cursor with the command Cursor.exe --disable-extensions.

  4. Disabled all extensions (only one was enabled).

  5. Restarted Cursor.

  6. Opened settings.json to try and fix the Custom UI Style.

  7. For an unknown reason, CPU and RAM usage immediately jumped to 100% and 90% respectively and stayed there.

  8. Restarting Cursor didn’t resolve the issue.

Scenario 2:

  1. Uninstalled Cursor.

  2. Reinstalled version 0.4.6.11.

  3. Disabled all extensions (only one was enabled).

  4. Started working… (observing).

  5. Noticed high CPU and RAM usage initially, then it quickly spiked to 100% and 90% and remained stuck.

My Requests/Expectations:

  1. Several of my colleagues who have been using Cursor for at least six months have reported similar issues with 100% CPU and RAM usage. As a recent convert from VS Code, I’m already seeing this problem. I urge the Cursor development team to prioritize fixing this, even if it requires a significant refactor of the application.

  2. Cursor’s high CPU and RAM usage is a major concern. It feels significantly less efficient than VS Code, despite being a fork. This causes our laptop fans to run at full speed, which is disruptive. Please focus on drastically improving performance.

  3. I use the “Roo Code” extension in VS Code, and it runs very efficiently. This extension offers similar functionality to Cursor’s AI Chat. Being open-source, it might be a valuable resource for the Cursor team to study and potentially gain insights for improving Cursor’s performance.

  4. Please address the small font size in the Chat AI panel/editor. It’s difficult to read on my 14-inch laptop (1920x1080 resolution). Adding a setting to allow users to adjust the font size in various panels would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
