Long chat summarisation fails

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

When chat is too long, user is prompted and asked if they want to “Start new thread with summary”. When the option is selected, the current chat is closed leaving user with an empty chat, and no summary. This has happened to me twice today.

The original thread can be found in history but it cannot be summarised

Steps to Reproduce

Create a long chat. Wait until prompted to create a new thread with summary and click that option. The current (i.e. the long) chat is closed and no summary is created in the new chat.

Expected Behavior

Current chat should not be deleted.

Does this stop you from using Cursor

No - Cursor works, but with this issue

Hey, thanks for the report. This really looks like an issue with the chat summarization feature.

To help us investigate, please share:

  • Request ID: next time this happens, open your chat history, find the affected chat, click the three‑dots menu in the top right of that chat, and select “Copy Request ID”
  • Console errors: when summarization fails, open the developer console (Help > Toggle Developer Tools) and check for any errors. If you see any, please take a screenshot and share it

Since the original chat is still available in your history, you can keep working by duplicating it if needed (three‑dots menu > Duplicate).

I’ll pass this to the team. Let me know when you’re able to provide those diagnostic details.
