[Megathread] Cursor layout and UI feedback

It’s introduction was a hot mess, but I’m starting to like that menu

If you know Cmd-Alt-B that is, a visual button is missing here.

I’ve lost my double arrow :frowning:

Oh my God, thank you. I’ve been struggling with this ever since the interface update. That agents panel was driving me crazy every single day. Why can’t I just open the chat list? And why am I supposed to know some secret keyboard shortcut? I can’t see any option in the settings or anywhere in the UI to switch to chat mode except pressing Ctrl + E.

Thanks you saved me another hour of figuring out why the settings were all gone now. I thought maybe they removed all this in the latest 2.5 release.

I second this. I lost all of my customized layouts

I’m also missing all these buttons. I’m really mad. Please rollback this to the previous. I really loved that customization options at a click.

It’s insane that they keep adding/removing features to just later add/remove them again. Can Cursor just pick out a layout system and move on. Their weird obsession with needing to force changes to the layout on us has been going on for months. Are there really a lot of people asking for the layout to be changed this much?

Hi guys im working on simplifying our UI here. I know it’s thrashed quite a bit over the last few months but i’m hoping we will get back to a simple and usable state that everyone loves for next release.

Could you guys tell me about your custom layouts that you had so i can make sure we support them? Most people i’ve talked to just wanted to maximize the chat or hide the agents sidebar

That agents panel was driving me crazy every single day. Why can’t I just open the chat list?

Working on a fix for this right now, i assume by chat list you mean just the panel with the actual chats in them, and not the sidebar with the list of all your chats right?

This is a busy thread so sorry if i miss things, but DMs open as well

I don’t like how the ‘Hide chat button’ has disappeared.

It all started when cmd+I and cml+L rendered the agent in an actual panel along with other files, rather than its own dedicated thing. I would love to be able to go back in time to then.

During my workflow I always seem to stumble across having 2 chats. There is no button to remove it anymore although I appreciate there is a (somewhat awkward) shortcut) I can use.

I appreciate my suggestion isnt much helpful, tldr I liked it when chat was its own seperate thing I can use to cmd+L instead of splitting my screen in 2.

Appreciate the honest post @msfeldstein thanks for chiming in.

Is it possible you have this setting set to Editor rather than Pane? You should definitely be able to have all your chats just in that chat panel on the right rather than in editors mixed with files. This is in Cursor Settings → Agent

Thank you didnt know that was a thing!!
It also fixed an annoyance I had with the cursor settings behaving in a similar way.
Very happy with it now

This was THE ONE THING they got right..

It’s so maddening to come here and see all the things going wrong

If I wanna get angry, I come here.

For all the one, wo want back the old “Change Layout” Menu. Damn, we missed it.

We dont like new “comptact” → hide_layout_extended

Every time I restart Cursor my sidebar switches back to left and I have to manually change it “View > Appearance > Move Primary Side Bar Right” .

My user settings has:
“workbench.sideBar.location”: “right”,

IMO, the one who constantly ‘playing’ with the layout settings is completely incompetent in what he’s doing and must be fired.
The current ‘new’ layout settings (with only the agent and editor icon buttons) is complete sh.t which 1) doesn’t work properly (width of the chat and editor windows jump all the time) and 2) doesn’t allow to switch layouts quickly (because of (1) I need to adjust panels width all the time).
The chat and agent windows accessibility is crucial for such tools, so must be always accessible and consistent in its behaviour. Not it is not at all, which affects our dayly work.

The Cursor update on March 3rd added an ugly and redundant title bar… Seriously? Do you really think it’s helpful to have a double layered title bar taking the screen space with useless information and buttons one probably wouldn’t use even once for a year? It’s so frustrating to find there’s no way to properly remove it or restore the previous layout. The following two ways can hide the newly added title bar, but with unbearable costs, breaking the usability of the auxiliary sidebar (aka secondary sidebar):

  1. if you turn off the “Workbench > Layout Control: Enabled” in settings, you will no longer be able to switch between tabs in the auxiliary sidebar. Once you are on an cusror chat tab, and then switch to another non-chat tab, the tab container will immediately disappear so you will never be able to go to any other tab.
  2. if you turn off the “Cursor Settings > Layout > Title Bar” setting, a quite big area at the top of the main sidebar will be occupied by a blank container only holding the “go back/go forward” buttons originally in the title bar. And the tab container will also disappear for the auxiliary sidebar.

I don’t know why Cursor keeps trying to teach developers what layouts to use. I just hope I can keep my own layout I am most used to and comfortable with. I meticulously and carefully designed and iterated them for years and I work most efficiently with them. Cursor is now like forcing users to give up the accessibility and convenience of the whole auxiliary sidebar by making it exclusively work only for the chats pane. I sincerely hope this can be fixed. Please at least give us an option to apply the layouts from previous versions, or a setting to stick with our current layout so it’s not broken by every single update.

If Cursor keeps messing up with the layout, I am not to renew my subscription and am going back to VSCode… It’s so annoying and exhausting :face_exhaling:

I think my thread would fit in here too, concerning chat history UI in Cursor 2.6:

In regards to the next file button and the undo/keep buttons being in an overlay state vs in the breadcrumbs. It is madness trying to deal with all of these wacky UI changes.

Pressing Cmd + E for Mac or Ctrl + E for windows.
I pressed the shortcut until I saw the double arrows in the top right.

image

It appears to be this shortcut.

Now my undo/keep buttons are behaving as an overlay again. It looks different after the most recent update, but I am seeing a button for going through the files. Is this what you are seeing?

image

I was able to also get this behavior by disabling breadcrumbs:

But now I don’t have the next file UI despite multiple files being changed.

image

How can cursor’s UI be so convoluted. When I see this I have to press Ctrl+E, then it appears. But then my chat history panel no longer works.

Exhausting to maintain a stable UI experience.
