I upgraded to Cursor version 3.8.11 and restarted my project, which had dozens of files open across multiple windows on several monitors.
After restarting the IDE, all windows opened on the primary monitor only, and none of the windows previously displayed on the other monitors were restored.
I tried reopening the files and moving them back to the secondary monitors. However, whenever I select a file from the workspace, Cursor automatically closes all files and windows on the secondary monitors and keeps only the main window open.
Additionally, the closed IDE windows do not remain accessible from the taskbar. I now see only a single Cursor window in the taskbar, whereas the other two windows that were previously displayed on my secondary monitors disappear completely.
This behavior significantly disrupts my workflow, as I rely heavily on a multi-monitor setup with multiple open windows.
Why didn’t you test your updates in multiple OS!!
Steps to Reproduce
Move any opened file to a sub-monitor and try to click on any file in the file explorer, the subscreen windows will be closed immediately
Hey, thanks for the detailed report. This looks like a regression in multi-monitor window restore behavior in 3.8.11, and it looks like a bug on our side.
To file this correctly and route it to the right team, can you confirm one thing: the windows that disappear from your secondary monitors and also vanish from the taskbar, are those regular editor windows, or the Agents Window (Glass)? The root cause depends on that.
A couple more questions to speed things up:
Does this happen in a new empty workspace too, or only in your current project?
Are you using different DPI/scaling on your monitors, like one at 100% and another at 125% or 150%?
I can’t promise a fix timeline yet, but I’ll post an update in the thread as soon as I have one.
Cursor IDE refuses the secondary monitors screens whether it’s agent window or files windows, I have three monitors, the secondary monitors have a lot of files split vertically, all closed after Cursor 3.8.11.
I started a new project, moved an agent window to a monitor, a file in the other secondary monitor and a file in the main screen, saved a workspace, restarted the Cursor IDE, all opened files in the secondary screens have been closed and the only file remains open is the one in the main monitor, The other files in the secondary screens are not even moved to the main monitor.
P.S. In the new project the secondary screens opened windows are NOT closed when a file selected from files explorer.
In my current project with a lot windows opened, when I move a file to a new window in a secondary monitor and hit any file in the files explorer, the opened windows in the secondary screens closed immediately.
I think you should see it by yourself and, see the writing in the agent windows in secondary screens (My other issue) which still slowing me down.
Thanks, that’s enough to log the issue. The fact that in a fresh new project the secondary windows don’t restore after restart (this affects both editor windows and the Agents Window), plus there being no DPI difference, is exactly what we needed.
Confirmed, this looks like a regression in multi-monitor window restore in 3.8.11, and it’s a bug on our side. I’ve reported it internally. I can’t share a fix timeline yet, but I’ll post an update here as soon as I have one.
On the second symptom (clicking a file in the explorer closes windows on secondary monitors), it’s helpful that it doesn’t reproduce in a new project and only happens in a large one. If you can catch exact steps in a new project where it happens, please share them. It’ll help narrow down the cause.
