Option to Customize Default Layout After Updates (Agent Mode)

Feature request for product/service

Cursor IDE

Describe the request

Hi Cursor Team! :waving_hand:

I’ve been using Cursor for a while now, and while I love the platform’s potential and the tools available, I’d like to make a feature request regarding the Agent Mode layout.

Issue:

After each update, the Agent Mode seems to be forced as the default layout, and I have to manually switch back to my preferred layout every time. It’s a bit frustrating, especially when working on time-sensitive tasks, as it disrupts my workflow.

Feature Request:

It would be great if there was an option to set a default layout that stays consistent across updates, or at least an option to turn off Agent Mode as the default layout so that it doesn’t reset every time the app is updated. This would allow users like me to have more control over the layout preferences and save time when getting back to work.

Additional Thoughts:

It would be awesome if users could easily toggle between layouts (Agent Mode, Classic Mode, or any other custom modes) without having to dive deep into the settings after every update.

Maybe a setting that allows auto-switching to the last used layout would be beneficial as well.

I believe this change would help improve the user experience, especially for those of us who rely on specific layouts for our productivity.

Thanks for considering this request! Looking forward to hearing from the community and seeing what others think about this feature. :folded_hands:

Hey, thanks for the feedback! This is a known issue, and the team is already working on improvements.

Current option: there’s a gear icon in the top-right to configure the default layout. Changes made through that UI should persist across updates. Please try setting your layout there.

Your request is already being discussed in the official megathread:

  • Improving how layout settings are saved
  • Adding keybindings to switch between views
  • Overall UI stability

If the issue still happens after you set it via the gear icon, please share your Cursor version (Help > About) and the exact repro steps in the megathread.
