"reference" context is broken if used from a file that was outside the workspace and got closed

Describe the Bug

Open a workspace. Open a file from outside workspace. Copy some text from the file and paste into the Cursor chat — Cursor pastes it as this annoying “reference”. Close the file, type something into the Chat, send — the chat refuses, no error message.

Basically the “reference” context (whatever the official name is) is broken if used from files outside the workspace.

Steps to Reproduce

Open a workspace. Open a file from outside workspace. Copy some text from the file and paste into the Cursor chat — Cursor pastes it as this annoying “reference”. Close the file, type something into the Chat, send — the chat refuses, no error message.

This is annoying to me too sometimes. What I do is usually Cmd+Shift+V so that it just pastes the text with no reference. Or if I really need the reference then I keep that file open.

hope this helps!

hi @twardoch and thank you for the detailed bug report.

I have filed the issue with our dev team.

In the meantime, like @sanjeed5 mentioned paste with CMD-SHIFT-V to avoid the issue.
