👨‍🎓 Student Discount - Details, Updates, Q&As

Hi all,

As many of you have seen, our Student Discount has already been very popular, and we are still working to roll this out to more schools and countries as we develop the program.

In the meantime, here are a few answers to common questions we are seeing!

Please only comment on this thread if your question is not stated below - this thread will be updated as more questions are answered!


1. How do I get the student discount?

To get access to our student discount, which gives you 1 year of Pro for free, you can visit Cursor for Students | Cursor - The AI Code Editor.

On this page, you will be able to verify you educational email address, to get access to the discount.


2. Who is eligible for the student discount?

Currently, to ensure this system is not abused, only certain countries and schools can claim this discount.

We are working hard with our partners to bring this to more students soon!

Note: Please do not request your school to be added to this discount. We are working with our partners to improve this, but requesting your specific school will not change whether it will be eligible for this discount in the future.


3. How do I know if the discount has been successfully applied?

While redeeming the discount, you can confirm the discount is applied when you see the Stripe checkout page, as the total amount should be $0, and the discount should be visible before you check out.

We require a card to be added to your account, even with the discount, to ensure that you are billed for any additional usage outside of the Pro plan’s allowances.

Once redeemed, you can confirm your account is using the student discount, by logged into Settings | Cursor - The AI Code Editor, clicking the Managed Subscription button, and confirming the discount is listed under the See More dropdown under your existing subscription.


4. After redeeming, my plan is shown as a monthly Pro plan.

This is to be expected, as the discount applies as a -$20 monthly discount for 12 months.

Therefore, you will not be charged, even though the plan is shown as monthly.

Note: If you do not cancel your plan at the end of the discounted year, your plan will automatically renew using the attached card to your billing account.


5. I already have a subscription for Cursor!

If you are already a Pro user and redeem this offer, our system will automatically cancel your subscription and issue you a pro-rated refund for the time remaining on your plan, both on monthly and yearly plans.

This discount is not stackable with any others, so please do not redeem this if you already have a discounted plan.


6. I am seeing Invalid Email - what do I do?

This error shows up if you are trying to redeem the discount, using a verified school email address, while not being logged into cursor.com using that same email address.

To avoid abuse of this system, you must use the verified school email address as your cursor.com account address to be able to redeem this discount.


7. My student membership was not successfully verified. (a.k.a Verification Limit Exceeded)

If your school can be found on the list while verifying through SheerID, but you see an error during the verification process, this is likely due to SheerID being unable to verify you are a student.

If your school is on the list, but your verification had failed, please contact SheerID for more assistance with this:

Note: If your school is not on the list, or you have successfully verified your email, but are unable to claim the discount, this is not a SheerID issue, so they will be unable to assist.


8. I started the process, but I don’t know what to do next

To check your verification status, or to continue the verification process, you can visit this site and use the email address input under the header I started the process, I don't know what to do next


9. I successfully verified my student status and applied the discount but I no longer have access to Pro.

We identified a subset of users who bypassed our country restrictions in order to gain access to the student discount. Around 36 hours ago we removed access to Pro for this set of users. If you believe you were removed incorrectly, please reach out to us to resolve your situation.


10. I have received an email saying my plan is being revoked due to abuse?

This email was sent to those who verified their student plan in a country we currently do not support, as some countries have much easier methods of gaining educational email addresses for non-students.

While we want to ensure this discount is not abused, we also do not want to revoke the plan from real students. Therefore, at this time, we have decided to not revoke any plans.

In the coming days, you may receive an email asking you to reverify your account, potentially with additional steps involved to ensure only students are able to get this discount. Please complete this as soon as you can to ensure your plan remains active.


11. I have a question that is not answered above

TLDR: I guess my account got bugged somehow, it is accepted by sheerID; “[email protected]” is my mail.

Hello there, I had an existing account on my laptop. Then I saw people commenting “Don’t sign up with your own email, use edu for both sheerID and cursor” and I registered a new account with my email. I can provide anything requested from cursor team to show you I really am a student. Then I validated my account on that page and I received mail from you that I earned free yearly cursor. But this is how my cursor account settings page looks like.

I also can’t use cursor on the app on my edu mail account.

I can’t do anything on that page, I can see I am getting 401 unauthorized from almost all of your services.

Running into an issue where SheerID confirms student status, but when I click apply discount from the email it says it has been applied to my account. But when I click “Upgrade to Pro”, the Stripe page I was redirected to does not reflect the discount. For context, it’s for a Canadian university where the schools email domain ends in .ca rather than .edu - would this be the reason why the error may be occurring even though SheerID validates the student status?

I accidentally signed up through my actual (non-student) account, and used my student email, and now it’s giving me an “already redeemed” error when I’ve haven’t redeemed anything.

I don’t know if this is because I was logged into my non-student account when I entered my student email into the form, or if this is just a bug.

Same here. I was logged in with my GitHub account before the verification requirement. I successfully verified my educational account using my main email on Cursor, but when I was redirected to the Stripe page, the discount still didn’t apply.

I study in Germany, and we use .de emails.

My university shows up on SheerID, and I was able to verify my student status. But when I click on the “Apply Discount” button, it redirects me to my “Account Settings” tab, and when I manually try to upgrade to Pro, the discount does not show up.

My friends from school did have success with claiming the student discount with their .de emails, so I do not think it is .de related. Can I please get my student discount, since I am clearly eligible for it?

I have the same issue as above. Got the “successfully confirmed student status, apply discount” email. But clicking on it, nothing happens afterwards. Shows the regular dashboard, and upgrade to pro shows $20.

I signed up with my account and tried to verify with my student account. My student account says verified but I can’t apply the discount to my main account… If I try to verify my student cursor account with the email the verification has been exceeded.

Hi team,I have successfully verified on sheerID,while the link only redirect me to the dashboard. If I manually click the upgrade PRO button, the bill is still $20.

Hi everyone,

I hope you’re all doing well. I’m reaching out to the community because I accidentally used some services that went beyond the limits of my free student Pro plan with Cursor. I was using it for the first time today, and unfortunately, I mistakenly accessed features that resulted in charges, even though I was supposed to be using the free Pro services.

Has anyone else experienced something similar or know if there’s a way to resolve this issue? I’ve already contacted Cursor support, but I thought I’d check here to see if there’s any advice or experience from the community.

For this one go to SheerID’s FAQ Page and pick I started the process, but I don’t know what to do next. It will resend the link and it MIGHT work. I have another issue and while trying to figure it out I noticed that it resends a link. See if that link helps you activate your account!

I appreciate this! I have a .gr and I thought the lack of .edu might be the issue. It seems though that it is not!

To answer some of these:

  • @kunefe @cychen2021 @ewzxyh This error, where the dashboard is not loading correctly, is strange - investigating with the team now.
  • @codeJockey5000 @Fahrenheit_37 @alvertosk - We have had to withdraw the eligibility for some schools and areas while we solidify the system, so it’s likely your .ca or .de email will no longer work, even if you or someone else has previously verified with SheerID - should have more updates on this soon
  • @anonyon @jpitts Please read question 7, which mentions this.
  • @lucianomartinsjr @SajidZakaria @wh01sJake You must use the same email that you verified with as the email for your cursor.com account, so this issue is expected - the discount will only show in Stripe if the emails match
  • @Asad_Ghaffar The support team will get back to you soon.

Appreciate the quick reply! I just want to know to stop pestering your support and SheerID’s support. Hopefully we will know if my Uni is added soon! Again thanks for the quick reply!

Sorry I forogt to mention that I’m an EU student as well and I verified yesterday with my .ie email. Guess the best for us rn is to wait.

I didn’t know that both of sheerID and cursor email should be same, when I registered to cursor, I was using my email and applied to the student pack with my student email, so when I press Apply Discount, it still shows 20$
How to solve it?

I’m having the same problem as many here, SheerID successfully verified my student email, but clicking on “apply discount” takes me to the settings page and clicking on “Upgrade to Pro” takes me to the Stripe page with no discount.

The account was freshly made with my student e-mail.

I am from Paraguay. I already applied and was approved, but there were issues applying the discount since it did not appear on the billing page. Now that I see this information indicating that they have restricted certain countries, I tried again on the application page and noticed that my country is no longer available. What happens in my case, since I was already approved but am still waiting for the issue to be resolved?
