Describe the Bug

I’m using the beta version. In the last update, the download started, but now I get the message “Unable to execute the file in the temporary directory. Installation aborted. Error 5: Access is denied.” I located the downloaded file (CodeSetup-stable-1.7.11.exe), moved it to another folder, and tried to run it manually, but I always get the same error message. PS: I’m the admin on my workstation.

Steps to Reproduce

just try to update Cursor

Does this stop you from using Cursor

No - Cursor works, but with this issue

Hey, thanks for the report. Please try removing the previous version and installing the new one.

it doesn’t work. this happened recently. looks like recent cursor changes for Windows version has something hit Windows security.

btw, the latest VSCode installer/updater has no such issue.

this issue happens in 1.7.x and recent 1.6.x. I was using 1.6.x (forgot the version) but failed to upgrade to latest 1.6.x and 1.7.x. I tried to uninstall & reinstall but failed on both 1.7.17 and 1.6.46. 1.5.5 is ok to install. So the issue was introduced in recent 1.6.x versions.

It’s possible your antivirus is blocking this update, or Windows Defender if it’s enabled. Please check the settings and, if necessary, add Cursor to the exclusions.

1.5.5 installation works fine, without any change in Windows or defender

My colleage and I are having the same issue.

Version: 1.6.45 (user setup)

To note if I Run as Administrator the error no longer appears. However, I get this message so…. maybe that’s not ideal.

I’m going to try to install an older version because the newer version has another bug regarding the AI [Keep Changes] button not working.

it looks like got fixed in the latest 1.7.x. I got cursor auto upgraded from 1.5.5 to 1.7.40.
