I haven’t used Cursor in a few weeks and now I get the update available message.
What is the official procedure to update cursor on Ubuntu (22.04) AMD64?
I still see 49.6 but 0.50 is available. I get the message at the lower left corner to update but nothing happens other than the image downloading.

Yes, it just shows the update dialog at the lower left corner with a download option. It does not update automatically.
use the revo uninstaller software to remove the cursor completely and delete all the leftover files and data and registry options easily through the revo uninstaller software then reinstall the Cursor Again

Can you try to follow this guide from step 2, to clear your Cursor data, then reinstall it fresh?
