Cannot type in Chat window for specific project

Hello,

I’ve searched a bit to try and resolve this but in my main project cursor just started not letting me type into the chat window to provide a prompt.

It does however let me type into composer.

On my own I did the obvious things, restart the app, computer, window. Reloaded the window with extensions disabled etc. Still blocked typing into the typearea.

Started researching and found some people had issues with regular copilot installed or copilot++ I dont even have those extensions and I tested with all extensions disabled.

Some people said open a new window. And I did this and it works! However, as soon as I open the same project it stops working again making me believe it’s something project specific.

I can see in the chat section that it saves my previous chats for the project folder so I’m guessing theres some sort of internal project cache. I couldn’t find where to clear this and if it was something stored in the folder itself.

So I duplicated the project folder in Windows and opened that in cursor. No issue with typing. So its for sure something with the project/cache etc.

I saw this thread but it magically resolved for them and they didn’t provide details.

@amanrs You were looking into that thread with the same issue. Please let me know if you’d like me to provide my log file or do a call as you suggested in the other thread.

For the moment, I will work within my cloned folder and update if it stops working

I also have this bug (unable to add characters to the chat window).

I just use the composer window, I am unsure the feature difference but it gives the features similar to the previous version just with a lot more bells and whistles (and clutter).

still no update? this bug also happening on my cursor

Update: This is now happening again in the project that was clean.

No idea what triggers it, no error messages. Persists after reboots etc.

How Can I clear the project cache???

Same here , already using the most recent version
but cannot write anything,
hi Cursor could you please investigate asap, thank you

The same also happening here.

MacOS Sonoma 14.4
Python project.

Most of the time I am not able to write any text when I open the chat with Cmd+Shift+L.

Restarting the Cursor sometimes fixes it.

Update: 5 days is the record now for Cursor not blocking chats on existing projects.
Haven’t seen much official comment on this…

Same thing here!! Very annoying!! Has happened to me several times now!!

CURSOR: Any comments or solution???

So I’ve had this issue too, what very quick solution is to click the square symbol “Cursor: Open Chat as window” then click it again to undo.

I’ve found that this allows me to type again instantly and takes say 2 seconds to do.

The issue may stem from vscode not correctly registering where the “focus” should be when this chat box is expanded initialy.

hey! sorry to hear this. are there any reproducible steps, recordings or even screenshots that you could share? would help us a lot in troubleshooting this!

Having the same issue, first it was the chat window that did not allow any inputs. Now this latest version it’s the composer.

It’s simply not allowing any input in the chat window what so ever. The only thing I was able to do to make it work was using the “open as editor”.

This is a python project, used to work before latest version update. Nothing special with this workspace afaik. And it works if I open another workspace.

Below is a screen recording of me having the issue.

Actually now that I closed it from the “open as editor” the regular composer window also worked, and I could see that some of the letters that were pressed were there now. Very strange.

It does sound like a start-up issue and focus registration sounds pretty plausible to me.

Hey there! I was going to report this as well, but found this thread.

I can reliably reproduce the issue by opening a composer (or chat) window as editor from the cursor panel:

Then, from the newly opened editor window, “Move into window” or “Copy into window”

I’m able to then add referenced files and stuff, but the main input just doesn’t seem to respond.

If it helps with priority, I find the issue frustrating because I have a large monitor. Having the chat input in the bottom-right (or anywhere but right in the middle) has been causing neck pain :). This is not only an issue with cursor, I’ve noticed since so much time is spent in the input to produce well-formed prompts, I have the issue with most LLM interfaces. I have started consciously adjusting my windows to move the chat window front-and-center.

It works fine in the cursor panel and if it’s attached to the IDE as an editor panel.

Only seems to happen when I detach the chat from the main IDE window.

I am now experiencing the exact same problem, it didn’t come with any updates or restarts, it just suddenly stopped responding to inputs.

Same problem but in reverse. I can type in chat but not in composer. The trick of open composer as Editor fixes it. But it is extremely frustrating.

The same happening to me.
I am not able to type in the composer chat window.
I tried, deleting the ursor and reinstalling a fresh copy. but still no luck.

What worked:
Finder → CMD + Shift + G → Application support → Cursor (remove this folder)
This will start over the entire cursor setup, just like reinstalling.

Thanks for sharing the fix 0xSG! I’ll make sure to flag this to the team as it seems to be affecting quite a few users.!

The same for me. Sometimes I can not type in Chat window, sometimes in Composer
