Can't close new Origin ad in Windows app

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

Are you trying to make this app completely unusable?
There’s a new ad/banner/spam added today overlapping all components, even the context menu and response are behind it.
And it comes without a close button.

Was this even tested before rolling out to production??

Steps to Reproduce

Open the Windows app (I didn’t update recently, see why in [Bug] Windows auto-update constantly "uninstalling" Cursor - #8 by Bruno_Lima )

Expected Behavior

If you want to show an ad, include a close button.

Screenshots / Screen Recordings

Operating System

Windows 10/11

Version Information

There’s no way to even see since this ad runs on top of everything!

Does this stop you from using Cursor

Yes - Cursor is unusable

Hey, thanks for the report. This is the Origin banner that’s currently shown in the app. It does have a close button X in the top-right corner of the banner card in the lavender gradient area above the ORIGIN logo on the right. But in dark themes it renders with very low contrast and almost blends into the background, so it looks like there’s no button.

What you can do right now:

  • Hover the top-right corner of the banner and click the X. It’s there, it’s just hard to see. After that, the banner will close and won’t show up again.
  • To make it easier to spot, switch to a light theme temporarily using Ctrl+K Ctrl+T. On light theme the X is clearly visible. Close the banner, then switch back to dark theme.
  • As an alternative, clicking Try Origin also closes the banner forever, but it opens the Origin page. If you don’t need that, it’s better to use the X.

The low visibility of the close button in dark themes is a known issue we’re tracking. I can’t share an exact timeline yet, but I’ll reply here if there’s an update. Let me know if the X doesn’t work for any reason.
