Clarification on Pro Plan Billing: Usage vs. Spending Metrics

Hi everyone,

I recently subscribed to the Pro plan and I’m a bit confused about the metrics shown in the billing dashboard. I want to make sure I fully understand how the limits work before I continue coding.

Right now, my dashboard shows my “Usage” at a certain dollar amount, but my total “Spending” is only at 1% (with Auto at 1% and API at 3%). My usage 2.47$ now

I just want to confirm my understanding:

  1. Is the “Spending” percentage the actual metric that determines my Pro plan quota?

  2. If my “Usage” estimate exceeds limit, but my “Spending” is still well below 100%, am I still safe to use premium models like Claude Sonnet without extra charges?

  3. Assuming I do not enable any extra on-demand usage in the settings, I won’t be billed anything beyond my base pro subscription regardless of how high the “Usage” dollar amount gets, correct?

I just want to make sure I don’t accidentally overspend while using the premium models. Thanks in advance for the help!

Hey, quick confirmation on all three:

  1. Yes, Spending % Auto % / API % is the metric that controls your Pro plan quota. That’s what decides when you get throttled.

  2. Yes, you’re safe. Usage $ is just an informational estimate of the retail value of what you’ve used. It can be higher than your $20 subscription price because the included allocation can be worth more than the sticker price. It does not bill you. Spending % is what matters for limits.

  3. Correct. If on-demand usage is disabled in your settings, you won’t be charged anything beyond your base Pro subscription. Once Spending % hits 100%, you’ll be rate-limited instead of billed extra.

Short version: watch Spending %, ignore Usage $ for billing. More detail here: https://cursor.com/docs/account/plans-and-usage

Okay, that’s very clear. Thanks for the explanation.
