Codex IDE Extension disappears

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

The Codex IDE Extension tab disappears and/or does not fully load. This has been happening since the beginning of the week.

Steps to Reproduce

The Codex IDE Extension tab appears upon loading of Cursor, but disappears as soon as a the user moves to a Cursor chat. The user can force the Codex tab to appear again by disabling the extension, restarting extensions, and then enabling it again, but the Codex tab does not load it’s contents properly.

Expected Behavior

The tab should appear upon startup or when the extension is enabled, and the extension should be fully functional.

Operating System

Windows 10/11

Does this stop you from using Cursor

Sometimes - I can sometimes use Cursor

Hey, thanks for the report.

We need more data to find the cause. Please share:

  • A screenshot/video at the moment the tab disappears
  • Errors from Help > Toggle Developer Tools > Console
  • Logs: CTRL+Shift+P > Developer: Show Logs… > Extension Host
  • A snapshot from CTRL+Shift+P > Developer: Open Process Explorer at the time of the issue

Please also check if any of these help:

  • Disable all extensions and keep only Codex IDE. Does it still happen?
  • Reinstall Codex IDE
  • Enable the extension monitor: Settings > Application > Experimental > Extension Monitor Enabled, then CTRL+Shift+P > Developer: Open Extension Monitor and see if there are spikes/errors for extensionHost

Here are videos of the disappearance and process explorer, copy of the extension host log, and screenshot of the console

extension_host_logs.txt (20.6 KB)

Also, uninstall/reinstall of Codex did not change behavior, nor did disabling all other Extensions and enabling only Codex. I could not locate Settings > Application > Experimental > Extension Monitor

Thanks for the video and logs. I moved the icon to the right panel and can’t reproduce the issue, my Codex tab stays saved. Could you also try updating to version 2.2.36? It might be fixed there, at least it works for me.

I believe I was on 2.2.36 when I recorded all of that content - I didn’t confirm beforehand, but I’m showing that version now and I haven’t closed/restarted Cursor since recording. Appreciate your attention!

Hi, I’m dealing with the same issue. The Codex chat “tab” is gone. I did re-install the extension without luck. Checked in VS-code, there is works normal

It works again after a restart of the extension. Not sure why it did not work 2 days ago, maybe new version of the extension? Any way, it works

The bug still exists for me after updating to 2.2.43

This bug continues to be an issue in 2.3.29

It looks like a display issue. Right-click the header and check if “Codex” is enabled in the menu.

Also try setting a shortcut to open the sidebar. If the first option doesn’t work, you can try opening Codex using the shortcut.

Codex does appear in the right-click menu, thank you!

Hi - this is still happening and Cursor’s UI has change to the point of the above fixes not working anymore. Can anyone update this issue for the new cursor UI differences? Is there a new fix for those of us that are running into it now?
