From nowhere my CPU usage is randomly spiking

I’ve read multiple threads about high CPU usage, but most of the time it seems to be connected to different extensions. However for me it’s just on random files.

When working for 1-3 hours I suddenly feel that the editor gets sluggish and then I open the Process Explorer and one of the files I have opened as at 600-700% of CPU usage (see attached printscreen). I quit and reopen Cursor, then I can keep working for a couple of hours usually before it happens again.

I have now idea what to do, it’s super annoying and it’s really hard to find the issue as it happens to random files I have opened.

Im on a:

  • M3 Macbook Pro with 18 GB Memory
  • macOS Sequoia 15.3
  • Cursor 0.45.11
  • Got a paid Cursor Pro account.

Update: 2 restarts needed since this post was created. I love Cursor and would really like to stay as a user and not go back to VS Code, but this is extremly annoying…

Update2: Now after just idling Cursor during a meeting, I came back to this message:

Same here. I faced the same issue today quiet often.

Somehow nice that Im not alone in this, even tough I know your pain.

Without knowing the actual issue, it feels like a certain opened file gets stuck in some kind of circular loop and Cursor gets more and more sluggish until it eventually crashes if I dont quit the application.

However, it’s not consistent as sometimes I can have the same files opened for hours without any issues, but then from nowhere the CPU usage starts to ramp up. The most recent ramp up happened when i just opened a new blank tab.

If you open it in vsCode with the same configuration does it still happen?

Nope, no issues with VS Code at all.

Exact same issue here on a M3 Pro 18GB RAM.

Happens at least once an hour and the process manager shows it’s coming from “window[1]”.
