How to open Agent Window and Editor Simultaneously

I know this used to be possible but is there a way to have both editor window and agent window opened simultaneously.

+1 I really need the ability to have agents open on one monitor and editor on another. Will be downgrading to 1.7 till this is an option

Hi,

Prior to 2.0, the new Agent-focused window was meant to stand apart from the main editor (cmd + E would open the Agent window from the editor, and would also reopen the normal editor as a separate window from the Agent).

Now, with 2.0 it seems the expectation is that one would only have one window open and toggle in between the views. This is a regression, and maladapted to the reality of people having multiple monitors, etc, and wanting to view and edit code while the Cursor agent(s) are doing so.

I would request bringing the default back to having them separate, while retaining the option to toggle views in any one window.

Thanks

Agreed, I also intend to downgrade to the previous version if I can’t figure out a way to get this working easier.

FWIW, it’s still possible to do, but requires duplicating workspace.

May also be possible if, from editor view, one right-clicks a tab and does “move into new window”

We had complaints from users that they do not want separate windows and additionally there were overlaps in data access between those windows which may cause issues. Therefore it is a single window now.

I understand the user feedback in supporting them in a single window. However, to use this feedback as a reason to always force them in a single window seems extremely short sighted to me. There are some simple cases where I’m okay with them being in the same window, but many others where I much prefer them separate, especially in the multi-display situation that a previous commenter stated above.

This should be possible with a simple toggle IMO.

Both options should be retained simultaneously

Came to this page from a Google search. I was looking for a way to revert to having the Agent window as a separate window as well. So it definitely something people were using. Sad to see the state of things be that it’s not possible.

When I’m on my laptop I love the one window functionality. When I’m sitting in my office and have 3 monitors, the separate agent window is so handy. Both features are uniquely useful in their own right depending on use cases.

Same here, having an agent window in a multiple screen setup improves my workflow. User should be able to toggle this feature.

I agree, why they updated like this…

A lot of developers love using multiple monitors. This is a well known trend for multiple decades. What are your product managers thinking?

Being able to have Agent and Editor windows open at the same time was a game-changer. Removing this was a stupid regression.

Cursor team, please listen to us on this!

I spend $2,000/month on Cursor - and that would be $200/month if I just used Claude Code. I pay for Cursor for the UI, and the Cursor 2.0 changes are the first thing that’s got me seriously considering churning.

Same here, the worklow of having both the agent view on one side, and editor on the other, was super useful.

This is now a straight downgrade. I am going to downgrade the version somehow until that is fixes.

Was hugely disappointed to see this layout option removed.

Reviewing and planning happens on Monitor 1 the Editor window. Execution happens on Monitor 2 in the Agent window. Or at least, it used to…

Using multiple monitors can sort of be done by

Then dragging that tab to a new monitor.

There is a bug where you then have to create a new chat otherwise the window doesn’t function correctly. Also its important you don’t have any chat tabs open in your scripting area . Then it should be fine. I am on windows fyi.

If we can’t have separate Agent and Editor windows, can we at least have an actually useful Avents view in editors? This “AI Pane” absolutely ■■■■■ for keeping track of multiple agents.

@condor Could you please confirm if there’s any appetite to bring back agents in a separate window? Or are you just saying it will definitely stay how it is now?

@condor could you please come with a guide or something to then downgrade to 1.7, so we are able to have multiple screens. Since getting a complaint about a feature and removing it from everyone seems like a pretty aggressive move for the cursor team.

One of the reasons we moved from multi window to single window is that in some cases the multi window caused issues with local data storage.

You can download Cursor 1.7 from Download · Cursor and temporarily set editor setting update.mode to Manual.
