Looks like the new Pro package still makes Cursor negative profit

While I have no problem with Cursor’s new pricing now and in the future, I’m wondering if the current Pro plan and auto mode are still hurting Cursor’s bottom line? I’ve seen some people buy the $200 plan and it’s still not enough, so is the unlimited auto mode hurting Cursor? Is that why Cursor has to charge for auto mode?

What do you mean, charge for Auto? It cost $20, but are you saying they are charging in addition to that?

I wouldn’t be surprised if Auto got heavily throttled in the future or went away entirely. Not sure how this sustainable long-term for $16/mo (when paid annual) for the amount of AI processing you can currently get with Auto.

Yes, Cursor will calculate rate limit for requests from Auto mode after 2025-09-15.

Well that ■■■■■. Now they cap Auto starting September 15

How are we not getting notified via emails or something about this. So shady for people who have bought annual memberships.

Starting at your next billing renewal after September 15, Auto consumes included usage at the following API rate:

Does this mean if you get an annual membership before September 15 you get unlimited Auto for a year…

Yes, until they change their terms again next month.

yea. All they have to do is throttle Auto for the “unlimited” grandfathered in people. Whatever, I guess this was promotional pricing we’ve been getting to boost adoption.

In my opinion, maybe because the Claude 4 non-thinking model is quite expensive, unlimited Auto mode will suffer heavy losses if users exploit it. So Cursor does not allow users to use unlimited Auto mode anymore?

I think so. The auto models are cheaper but if someone is over-using it, vibe coding with hundreds of messages per day, those costs are going to rack up.
