Rate Limit Duration Clarification - 29+ Hour Lockout with Claude 4 Sonnet

I’m seeking clarification on rate limit durations and reset timeframes, as I’m experiencing an extended lockout that seems inconsistent with standard practices.

Current Situation:

  • Locked out of Claude 4 Sonnet for 29 hours and 37 minutes (and counting)
  • No indication of when access will be restored
  • No clear reset timeframe provided

Context for Comparison:
When using Claude directly through Anthropic’s interface, rate limits are transparent with clear notifications like “You’re near your rate limit at 2 PM, it will refresh at 3 PM.” This allows for proper workflow planning.

Questions for the Community/Team:

  1. What is the standard duration for rate limit periods in Cursor?
  2. Are reset times communicated anywhere in the interface?
  3. Has anyone else experienced lockouts exceeding 24 hours?
  4. Is there a way to check rate limit status or reset timeframes?

I’ve seen other users reporting similar issues with unexpectedly high token consumption and rate limiting. Understanding the expected behavior would help with planning development workflows.

Any insights from the community or clarification from the Cursor team would be greatly appreciated.

Additional Note: If there are known issues with rate limiting duration or token calculation, it would be helpful to have an official status update so users can plan accordingly.

Thanks for sharing this. Really helpful - I couldn’t find this post when searching for solutions to my problem, which now makes sense given the shadow banning issues mentioned.

Good to know I’m not the only one dealing with these lockouts. The “every few hours” reset claim clearly isn’t working for multiple users, and the fact that discussions about it are being hidden is concerning.

My problem suddenly makes more sense in this context.

this is all user pro problem
no clear communication from Cursor about this

Just use auto mode. Your project does not “need” any specific model, and with auto you will never hit a rate limit. Which is based on supply and demand which they can’t predict so they can’t tell you.

And how exactly do you know what someone’s project needs exactly? Do you have insights into the overall complexity of all of them ? Real question. I’ve seen a few people say this and I’d love to know their rationale.

Hey all, please take a look here for more info:

I’ve been locked out of the Claude model for 16 hours now and my post received the same ‘Solution’. It’s not a solution, it’s a copy-pasted politician-style response.

Not having access to an entire model for over a day is wild.
