Updating from 1.6 to 1.7 broke Cursor IDE

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

After updating from cursor 1.6 to 1.7.28 the IDE “broke” to the degree such that it is no longer useable.

Some things that I’ve noted so far:

  • Layout/view is all messed up (see screenshot)
  • Can’t open Editor Settings, Keyboard shortcuts, etc.
  • Command palet is missing option such as:
    – View: Reset View Locations
    – File: Reveal active file in Explorer View
  • Much more

Steps to Reproduce

Update to 1.7.28

Expected Behavior

Not breaking

Downgrading to 1.6.46 resolved the issues

Does this stop you from using Cursor

Yes - Cursor is unusable

Hey, what you’re seeing is Agent Mode. You can switch back to Editor Mode using Cmd + E.

Thanks! You’re right. That solved it.

  • Where do I find docs on “Agent mode“? All I’m finding in the docs is on the mode called agent which is something else (and a bit confusing).
  • How come it opened agent mode by default when upgrading? Spent a couple of hours on this..
  • While downgrading to 1.6 my custom modes were deleted. Is there any way I can restore them? What I did was manually deleting the Cursor app and re-installing 1.6

Thanks again!

The Agent window is in beta, so there’s nothing about it in the docs.

It may have opened accidentally, or you might have pressed a shortcut.

Custom modes are stored in a database, so since you reinstalled Cursor, that likely caused them to disappear. You can restore them if you still have the Cursor folder where your data was stored.
