Can't Update Cursor IDE from Help menu

the bug is back for me @SamuraiCobra - how about you ?
i am on 1.6.42 now and the bug exists (again) - On win 10

Hi @andrewh how can i help for cursor to solve this issue once and for all this is insanely frustrating  I am seriously very very annoyed.

Thank you !

Hi @runbco I first saw an error saying Setup was already running so Setup couldn’t start. So, I closed all programs and restarted the computer. After that it was able to update to 1.6.45.

i still have the same issue. the fact that cursor cant fix this {insert a swearword here to express my frustration} is mindboggling. How the heck can they run an AI IDE but not fix a basic updater …

Facing the same issue.

I already tried this, close the cursor.exe from the Task Manager but it’s not working.

Hey, which version of Cursor are you using?

I was able to auto-update from Version: 1.7.17 to 1.7.28. I suggest downloading the installer from Cursor.com if you are using an older version than 1.7.17.

This is my config

I am having the same issue. Has anyone found a solution yet?

The sad thing is that it doesnt matter which version you use. The pattern is the same … download the latest version: Auto updater works 1 or 2 times and then breaks…

I had this constantly on couple of machines, both were running mcafee. Disabling virus check didn’t help, so uninstalled mcafee - hasn’t happened since. That’s a couple of months (and a lot of updates) since

Hey, thanks for sharing your solution. It could help other users facing a similar issue.

WARNING!

I’ve experienced this issue several times this past year. Today I downloaded a new .exe from the official cursor website and tried installing from there which worked in the past. This time, all my MCP servers and local cursor rules and extensions were wiped in the process.

Cursor saves me time overall but this is not a fun experience. Please get this solved guys. It’s been an entire year of this. I love the new features you release but if I have to wipe out my dev setup to get ahold of them every week its just not worth the hassle.

I too have McAfee Total Protection. Today I had the same issue arise after not happening for several updates. I resolved it this way:

Open McAfee
Click the 4 squares Icon to expand the sidebar
Scroll down the sidebar and click ‘Real Time Scanning’
Click the blue “Add File” button in the bottom right.
Navigate to C:\Program Files\cursor and select ‘Cursor.exe’
You should see it in the exclude files list.

IMPORTANT: Reboot and now try updating cursor.

Worked for me (and I didn’t have to uninstall McAfee!)

omg! One day cursor will be in legal trouble for this kind of issues when businesses rely on it.
I have pretty much given up for the moment and do not recommend cursor anymore. It is a disgrace how cursor handles this

it wont work for more than a few updates. this wont be a permanent solution (nor should it be why the hell would you need to exclude a file from your AV - no other software needs this)

I uninstalled the McAfee software preinstalled on my laptop, and the update works like a charm.

Thanks David. That might help. It should make it even more clear and easier for the cursor team to fix this issue  (if they were interested in fixing it)
