Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?
Grok Bot
Describe the Bug
I’m experiencing what appears to be the same issue others have reported with Grok Bot becoming stuck and failing to respond.
I have already:
Restarted my computer.
Confirmed Cursor is up to date.
Created a fresh copy of the affected Grok Bot.
Tested the new copy with a very simple health check that uses no tools, connectors, search, or memory.
The issue persists. The bot repeatedly returns “Bot failed to respond — Something went wrong while generating the reply. Try again.” even in the newly created copy.
Other Grok Bots also appear to be affected, so this does not seem isolated to a single conversation or bot configuration.
Could someone please confirm whether this is a known Grok Bot service issue and advise on any troubleshooting steps or information/logs I can provide to help diagnose it?
Thank you.
Steps to Reproduce
Open any existing Grok Bot in Cursor.
Send a simple message such as: HEALTH CHECK — NO TOOLS, CONNECTORS, SEARCH OR MEMORY. Reply exactly: FORGE_ALIVE
Wait for the response.
The bot fails with: “Bot failed to respond — Something went wrong while generating the reply.”
Restart Cursor/computer and repeat.
Create a fresh copy of the Grok Bot and repeat the same test.
The failure persists across both existing and newly created Grok Bots.
We took a look at both of your accounts, and this isn’t something you can fix from your side. The cloud computer that runs all of your bots got into a stuck state, and since every bot (including fresh copies) runs on that same computer, they all fail the same way. That’s why restarting and creating a new bot didn’t help.
Both of your computers have now been recovered on our end. Please fully quit Grok Bot (Cmd+Q on Mac, force-close on iOS), reopen it, and send a short test message in a new chat.
@Tamas_King, it looks like Grok Bot is signed in on several of your devices and at least one is on an older version. Please update every install to the latest version and keep just one open while you test.
If either of you still sees “Bot failed to respond” after that, reply here with the request ID from the error tray and we’ll take another look.
Body:
Hi team, my Grok Bot agent completely broke across both macOS and iOS with a “Failed to send” error.
My chat history has vanished from the UI, so I cannot retrieve a Request ID. Under Settings > Updates, both the “Update” and “Reset Grok Bot’s Computer” buttons are completely greyed out and unclickable even after a hard log-out and clearing my local application support cache.
It appears my account’s dedicated cloud runner is deadlocked. Could an engineer please manually recover or rebuild the Agent Computer on the backend for my account?
@kevinn Same issue here, on both my laptop and my phone.
Every time I open a bot it shows “Setting up your computer”, then it fails with “Can’t reach your computer. Your bots are saved.” with Retry and Recover computer buttons. Clicking either one does nothing - it goes straight back to the same “Can’t reach your computer” message every single time.
Happens on both my laptop and my phone on the same account, so it is not one device or one install.
I have created several bots/agents - they are all saved, but none of them will connect.
Retry / Recover computer have never once worked.
No request ID available, since the message never gets sent.
Based on posts 8 and 10 above this looks like the same stuck cloud computer, and it does not seem fixable from my side. Could you please recover/rebuild the agent computer for my account on the backend?
Hi @kevinn - thank you for the info - mine failed this morning and I did a reset and recovered (tailscale had to be reinstalled). I asked grok bot what happened and this was the reply:
The old VM is gone, so there’s no OOM crash dump left to prove it. What is left: this computer has 15 GB RAM, several agents each get their own desktop and Chrome, and even after a clean boot with almost no tabs it’s already using about 10 GB, with Chrome taking roughly 5 GB. A pile of leftover tabs on top of that would pin it.
Your 6am brief didn’t fire until 10:01, so it was stuck for hours, not a momentary freeze.
I’ll close leftover login/admin tabs from this morning so we don’t start the same pile again.
Something went wrong while generating the reply. Try again.
This happens on simple messages too, including “hello”, “Stop now”, and a new chat. Creating a new bot also fails with:
**Could not create the Bot. Please try again.**
The Agent Computer itself still opens. I can see the desktop, a terminal at `box@cursor:/workspace`, and the Chrome icon. So the box is reachable, but the bot process never generates a reply.
What I already tried:
- Force-stop the Android app and clear cache
- Sign out and sign back in
- Send Stop now / short test messages
- Tried creating a new bot
- Checked Settings on Android 1.5.0 — there is **no** Update / Recover / Reset Agent Computer option on mobile
Please recover / rebuild the Agent Computer for this account on the backend. I cannot reset it from the Android app.
I am also experiencing this issue right now with all of my Grok Bots. None of the suggested troubleshooting has worked. Please provide a solution as soon as possible.
Using on MacOS, iPadOS, iOS, and Windows 11 – all are inoperable.
