Restarting/repeating Agent conversations

Clear All Chats works too in the Agent Chat window, but it means you start fresh.

That works for a while but the issue happened again for me after a bit.

We should absolutely be refunded usage charges relating to this.

Has anyone heard ANYTHING from the dev team on this?

it stopped happening to me this morning. I am not sure why

It just happened to me again. I wonder if the model is related. I was on Claude Sonnet 4

It’s starting to appear to me that the to-do list is the main culprit of this. Does anybody know how to disable the new to-do list functionality?

That’s not the case. I ve been using the to-do list for over a week and no issues. This is new.

Multiple threads about this - I have not seen a response yet.

We’ve deployed a fix that stops the looping behavior here. If you see any more requests with this please send a request ID and I can take a look.

Cursor support in 20 min very quickly solved all my issues and questions: the email support response for this issue.

Thanks for the detailed explanation! I can see the issue is happening when you add custom rules for your design agent. Let’s fix this with some specific steps:

  1. First, try these rule adjustments:
  • Keep each rule under 500 lines
  • Make your rules more focused and specific (avoid overlapping responsibilities)
  • Remove any duplicate instructions in your rules
  • Use ‘Manual’ type rules (using @ruleName) instead of ‘Always’ type to have more control
  1. If you still see repeating messages, try this:
  • Open Settings (CMD + ,)
  • Go to Rules section
  • Temporarily disable the design agent rules
  • Start a new chat (CMD + N)
  • Re-add your rules one by one to identify which might be causing the loop
  1. When writing your rules:
  • Be specific about when the rule should apply
  • Avoid open-ended instructions that could trigger repeated responses
  • Consider using Ask Mode instead of Agent Mode to review changes before they’re applied

Could you try these steps and let me know if the repeating messages stop? Also, if you see the loop again, please immediately get a Request ID (CMD+Shift+P, type “Report AI Action”) as this will help us investigate further if needed.

Let me know how it goes!

Sounds like Cursor needs rule validation. Asking the user to perform all those steps is not a good user experience.

Has anyone tried the fix and is it working? I went ahead and rolled back

This is a terrible response from Cursor.

Are they seriously blaming users here? Rules (as previously written) were fine a couple of days ago, so something they changed broke this.

And suggesting Ask mode instead of Agent mode? “Sure, you won’t run into this bug if you don’t make use of the core value proposition of our product”
